According to Streetview the site is now part of Calthorpe academy (or possibly partly the road outside), and has been since at least 2008It says on the Lost Pubs website that it's now a cafe - not sure how up to date that is.
there was a dolphin pub on dolphin lane in acocks green, it was just off the warwick roadView attachment 61774 There are too many posts to trawl through for me to check so forgive me if these have been used recently.![]()
I am hoping Mike or one of the others will be able to verify this one for us. I have it down as The Dolphin, Warwick Rd Acocks Green and around 1927 Mrs Alice Pagett was the licensee.
I was born in Acocks green in 1940 so this was a bit before my time but it does not look anything like the Warwick Road I remember from my childhood.
Great photograph of The Alhambra cinema A Sparks! The first picture house that I ever used. I remember very well queuing in front of those steps on a Saturday morning to get into the 'ABC Minors Saturday Club'. My mother used to take us there also on school holidays to watch the Disney films. Unfortunately as we moved away in about 1964 when I was about 12 my memory of any pubs is very limited, unlike a few years later! The photograph of the Plough and Harrow on Moseley Road is interesting, it seems unusual to have a single storey pub like that.
I noticed it was next to the Alhambra cinema which closed in 1968 and found this old photo - no pub next door when this was taken.

No longer there. Now an Aldi supermarket. Pub run at one stage, I think, by Freda Cocks a one time mayor of Birmingham.there was a dolphin pub on dolphin lane in acocks green, it was just off the warwick road
Was gutted when I saw that the Dolphin had been demolished! It was my grandfathers favourite pub where he used to play dominos. He was in the pub team for many years. Was also a focal point for that side of Acocks Green. I remember sitting on the car park wall waiting for the no.44 bus. Think I have a picture of their domino's team somewhere. No longer there. Now an Aldi supermarket. Pub run at one stage, I think, by Freda Cocks a one time mayor of Birmingham.
From 1961 ( when I was born) to 1969 I lived at 34 Priestley Rd. Opposite the Hereford. There was a corner shop, ice cream sellers (Eric Defalco and his son Oswaldo), a row of garages then us. I only found out when I was in my 30s that the reason for moving was the slum clearances of the 60s.My grandparents (Sidney and Nellie Brewer ) were licencees of The Hereford Arms in the 1960's until 1970. I have happy memories of our visits there, the coal fires, the Vimto and crisps we could help ourselves to and playing in the coalyard at the back of the pub. The only "pub grub" in those days were the cheese and onion cobs on offer. The bread was supplied by Hawleys Bakeries which was situated further along Kyrwicks Lane.
Covered Wagon is definitely NOT CLOSEDOn a recent car trip across Birmingham during which I was a passenger I was able to check the pubs that I can remember during my lifetime and I had a shock. They were almost all closed as a public house and either knocked down or being used for other business This is how it went from my address in Sutton Coldfield to Billesley:
The Covered Wagon, Yardley Wood Road-Closed
My husband informs me it closed for longer than I thought but it is now open and worth a visit if you like Indian food. Do book first though.Thank you for the update.

Doing some Family Tree research I came across the following They are drawings said to be done by Harold, the son of the George Henry Forman, the Boot and Shoe dealer. Looking at the headed notepaper it's obviously from the 1910s (as per date line). Interesting to note that the address line...birminghamhistory.co.uk
