Pubs Of The Past

I think it is the angle the photograph was taken from that JUST misses out the pub. The 1957 one is full on , and shows the gap to the left of the air raid shelter (?) on the far left, which you do not see on the photo from an angle. Certainly, The Plough & Harrow is listed there in the 1956 Kellys and up to the 1969 edition (which can be taken to refer to 1968. It has disappeared from listings in the 1970 edition, though that does not mean the building itself was not still extant. The initial phot from Oldun to me looks as if it might not still be used as an actual pub, as the board giving licensee's name etc seems to have gone

I found it slightly amusing to see that the electoral rolls for 1925 and 1927 describe it as The Plough & Harrow Hotel - by present understandings perhaps slight delusions of grandeur.

Just back.Re your 8.13 pm post,A Sparks-I wouldn’t take you wrong.I appreciate your observations and I remain grateful for your help not long after I started.I was going to suggest more photographic evidence but I see that thanks to yourself and Mike
things have come on a pace.I agree same cinema, good photo, and further info/observations all interesting.Great stuff.

I was actually only looking to see if the cinema was still there out of interest, I know Moseley Road slightly but I couldn't remember seeing it - that was how I picked up on the apparent disappearance of the pub!

View attachment 61774 There are too many posts to trawl through for me to check so forgive me if these have been used recently.
I am hoping Mike or one of the others will be able to verify this one for us. I have it down as The Dolphin, Warwick Rd Acocks Green and around 1927 Mrs Alice Pagett was the licensee.
I was born in Acocks green in 1940 so this was a bit before my time but it does not look anything like the Warwick Road I remember from my childhood.
there was a dolphin pub on dolphin lane in acocks green, it was just off the warwick road

The photograph of the Plough and Harrow on Moseley Road is interesting, it seems unusual to have a single storey pub like that.
I noticed it was next to the Alhambra cinema which closed in 1968 and found this old photo - no pub next door when this was taken.

Great photograph of The Alhambra cinema A Sparks! The first picture house that I ever used. I remember very well queuing in front of those steps on a Saturday morning to get into the 'ABC Minors Saturday Club'. My mother used to take us there also on school holidays to watch the Disney films. Unfortunately as we moved away in about 1964 when I was about 12 my memory of any pubs is very limited, unlike a few years later!
Dave

No longer there. Now an Aldi supermarket. Pub run at one stage, I think, by Freda Cocks a one time mayor of Birmingham.
Was gutted when I saw that the Dolphin had been demolished! It was my grandfathers favourite pub where he used to play dominos. He was in the pub team for many years. Was also a focal point for that side of Acocks Green. I remember sitting on the car park wall waiting for the no.44 bus. Think I have a picture of their domino's team somewhere.

My grandparents (Sidney and Nellie Brewer ) were licencees of The Hereford Arms in the 1960's until 1970. I have happy memories of our visits there, the coal fires, the Vimto and crisps we could help ourselves to and playing in the coalyard at the back of the pub. The only "pub grub" in those days were the cheese and onion cobs on offer. The bread was supplied by Hawleys Bakeries which was situated further along Kyrwicks Lane.
From 1961 ( when I was born) to 1969 I lived at 34 Priestley Rd. Opposite the Hereford. There was a corner shop, ice cream sellers (Eric Defalco and his son Oswaldo), a row of garages then us. I only found out when I was in my 30s that the reason for moving was the slum clearances of the 60s.
Outside loo and tin bath in front of the coal fire !!!

On a recent car trip across Birmingham during which I was a passenger I was able to check the pubs that I can remember during my lifetime and I had a shock. They were almost all closed as a public house and either knocked down or being used for other business This is how it went from my address in Sutton Coldfield to Billesley:

The Reddicap-Closed
The Fox. Walmley-Open
The Bagot, Chester Road-Closed
The Norton, Kingsbury Road-Closed
The Navigation, Tyburn Road-Closed
The Armada, Spaghetti Junction-Closed
King Edward, Lichfield Road-Closed
The Swanpool, Aston Station-Closed
The Britannia, Lichfield Road-Closed
The White Tower, Nechells-Closed
The Ship, Camp Hill- Closed
The Brewer and Baker, Ravenhurst Street-Closed
The Shakespeare, Cnr Henley Street-Closed
The Black Horse, Cnr Kyotts Lake Road-Closed
The Victoria, Cnr Long Street-Closed
The Angel, Cnr Ladypool Road-Closed
The Mermaid, Warwick Road/Stratford Road junction-Closed
The Antelope, Stratford Road, Sparkhill-Closed
The Covered Wagon, Yardley Wood Road-Closed
The Valley, Yardley Wood Road-Closed

I'm not too conversant with the part of the journey between Spaghetti Junction and Camp Hill so there could be others but I was amazed to find there was only one pub that I could find in the whole of that journey that was still in business.

Covered Wagon is definitely NOT CLOSED
it is no longer an M&B pub. It is now a pub specialising in Indian cuisine. It has won several awards and to dine you need to book a table as it is very popular.
It is probably run more on restaurant lines than it used to be but it is still possible to pop in just for a drink.
How do I know? My husband drinks there some lunchtimes and I can see the Wagon lights from our back garden.

Sorry for the misinformation Janice. I had been told by a former regular of the Covered Wagon that it had closed some time ago. Did it close and reopen or didn't it ever close?

Clive

Closed long enough for the current lessee (if that is the right word) to do some sprucing up and work on the kitchen. About 3 or 4 weeks.
I suspect it would have closed otherwise but as a bar/grill itseems to be doing well.

Hi with ref to post 1693 Ladywood Pubs and 1704 Letterheads of Kelsey's by Oldun - I am looking for a photo of The Crescent Tavern which was on the corner of King Edward Road and Edward Street Ladywood Birmingham - the resident's around this area, always called it the Kelsey Bar and not by the original of the Crescent Tavern, so looking from the 1940's to 1960's when Ladywood started to be demolished.

Also i am looking for another photo of a Public House called The Grapes which was on Belgrave Road and corner of Hick street Balsall Heath.

Hi - that was the street name i was given - of Belgrave Road corner with Hick street - but could be the wrong side and they got mixed up and should have been Belgrave Road - Frank street.
