lindey,

I have no knowledge of these pubs, as they were well out of my stamping grounds, but I thought you might like to see these.

thanks for jolting my memory lindev. i dont know if you realise it but the acorn pub in wheeler st ran right through to wilton st. another bit of history about it is it was built on top of a morgue( imagine the bodies that must have lain there) in the early 60s the sunday mercury were doing a piece about the acorn and my dad george harrington just happened to be in there having a pint and checking his horse racing results. they took dads picture with the heading something like (george harrington checking racing results. ive been to the central library and gone through all the mercurys from 1960 to 1968 trying to find the photo of dad like i can get a copy but cant find it. i may have missed it or dad may be out by a year. it may have been 1959. i will have to go back to the library and have a look. if anyone has a picture of the acorn i would very much like to see it. wales

Wales

Glad you liked them, anytime just ask and if I can help I will. I'm still looking for the Vine (or was it the Villa).

Phil

hi, wales yes i did know about the passage running through to wilton street and i did know about what it was built on, my dad used the acorn, and so did i but i was upstairs at the disco, dont u agree that the photos of both pubs are brilliant.

hi pmc. dads going to love those photos. just to confuse you you are right i am looking for the vine inn villa street. but just a bit further up from the vine there was a much older pub called the villa tavern. it was there in the 1700s. that was demolished in the late 50s. mom and dad were 2 of the last customers to have a drink in there. (typical of dad) both of these pubs are very elusive but i keep hoping. best wishes wales

I remember The Greyhound. That cider was rougher than a bear's bum!
(Nice though).

Well remember it, a good deal for us hard up schoolboys!:D Talking about schooldays, I went to Bordesley Green Tech and we used to sneak in to The Why Not and the Gypsy's Tent, virtually next door to each other on Cherrywood Road. If I remember correctly the beer was elevenpence halfpenny for a pint of mild and one and a pennyhalfpenny for bitter. Our preference was the Why Not although if we spotted a teacher in there we'd use the Gypsy.;) I went to see if they were still there about 10 years ago and the Why Not had disappeared and the Gypsy's Tent had been re-named The Tipsy Gent.:angry2:

i do agree lindev. do you know what. if i had known back in the 60s that i would take such a keen interest in the history of birmingham in later life i would have taken so many pictures. i must say that without the time and effort put in by other members we would be lost. many thanks to them. wales.

very very true Wales, we have got pictures to go with the stories we tell our grandchildren now,

I see another Birmingham pub is to close, "The Jug of Ale" better known to those of my age group as "The Regents Court" this pub on the corner of Park Road and Alcester Rd Moseley is to be closed and demolished.

What is needed so badly in Moseley they need to demolish another pub, something they have a dire shortage of in Baslall Heath, Sparkbrook and Moseley "A curry house".

I just read it too, and apparently people have pleaded for the pub to be kept, but it's fell on deaf ears.

This was the pub of my childhood. My dad and mom were members of the bowling club, so the children of the members spent many hours a week playing in the grounds while they played bowls.
It was great, certainly a simpler way of life than today.:)Mo

Hi everyone
I know this is a long shot but does anyone have a pic of the Royal Exchange in Park Road Hockley.. I think in the 1950s it sold mild only ..would be grateful for any info ...I found the pub in a 1800s census and i was then called the Travelers Rest

That's a great photo of The Swanpool Astonite, I used to go in there quite a lot in the late 50s and early 60s as my ex husband was a member of the darts team there. They were a good team and we had many prizes - mostly poor quality cutlery, blankets, etc., when they won a league, or a championship over a few seasons, can't remember the exact details after all these years.

My aunt (father's half sister) Rosie nee Smith used to run the Shoes - I will know this when I see it but can anyone suggest where it was?

I think it was the 3 horseshoes

Does anyone have any pictures

thanks

As far as I am aware in recent history there have been 6 pubs in the Birmingham area called the Horseshoes or the Three Horseshoes.

Horseshoes Alcester Rd, Horseshoes Stratford Rd, Three Horseshoes Coventry Rd, Three Horseshoes Pershore Rd, Three Horseshoes Summer Lane. Three Horseshoes Catherine St.

The ones highlighted I have photo's of, so if it is one of the ones I have let me know and I will post it for you.

I was quite young when I went there! I think I would have remembered if it was Summer Lane. I don't think it was Pershore road either but Coventry Road might be possible. Trouble is I don't know her married name or I might get somewhere with the trade directories.

Could you send a picture of the Coventry Road one please?

Thanks

The Three Horse Shoes at 2102 Coventry Rd, has changed its appearance many times in its lifetime. I will post the one I think it is most likely you will recognise.

Thank you! I think this could well the one. I remember going round the back and into the kitchen. And the large expanse at the front is right.

Cheers

Well before your schooldays David so don't bother looking for yourself but I like this picture of what could best be described as a 'motley crew' outside the Gipsy's Tent, Bordesley Green.
