Hi Astonian I was talking to someone today who mentioned the Cross at Aston Cross....did she mean the Golden Cross? I know she mentioned her father had something to do with it whether he was a Landlord or not I don't know, maybe a local her name is Pat though I don't think Roper is her maiden name. what she was after was a photograph, I'm sure there must be one here somewhere but not sure where to look but I'll keep browsing for now.

Fergie, the Cross at Aston Cross would be the Golden Cross, and there are some photos on the main site of Aston Cross which include the pub.

save you looking

I remember playing in the gardens behind the Swan pub in Washwood Heath as a boy. I understand it has been pulled down now, pity it was an ancient building. There used to be beautiful large Lupins in the garden. I wonder if any survived.

Cato Street

Hi.Dollyferret. The building you ask about in Cato Street used to be a brewery originally. It was Hutton's 1890 to 1894 then City Brewery 1894 to 1899 and Vale of Evesham brewery 1899 to1906. Courtesy of Joseph McKenna's book--
Birmingham Breweries.
Regards BobS.

Pat Roper

Hi,Astonian. You mentioned Pat Roper in one of your messages. I am almost sure she used to run the Albion On the corner of Cato Street North and Nechells Place. The pubs nickname was Roper's.
Regards. BobS.

BobS you are right me and my husband used to go in there when peggy ran it, and she did run a good pub my husband still goes in there but it isn't the same without Peggy.

My aunt used to have an outdoor in Cato Street North.
It was at the bottom end, and just round the corner was my uncle Eno and aunt Winnie's pub The Sportsman, I think they moved to a pub up Castle Bromwich by Hodge hill It may have been the Heathway that name rings a bell, I can recall getting the no 11 bus to Fox and Goose then 56 I think to the Pub.
I think the outdoor was called the ROB ROY

I lived in Nechells Place, and remember the Albion Pub, I was under the impression that it had been knocked down, and was pleasantly suprised to hear your husband still uses it. My Parents if they went out preferred the Beehive, because it had a so called beer. Garden, About four long tables with benches either side, a yard with the ladies and gents Tiolets that was the beer garden, but hey who cared we had our pop and crisps

Does any-one remember The Hut it was a club situated in between Witton lakes and the allotments. They had live entertainment at weekends and children where allowed in. one day i was sitting outside with someother children and some-one had started a small fire and they had inadvertently put an empty bottle of sauce onto it, well it blew up and i was covered in brown spots from the leftover sauce.

thanks for that bob s,inside there has been a few fires, tatters have been in,old flour bags over the place, burnt out lorry, floors totally unsafe even for me to go and have a mooch,if i went thru the floor no one ever (or want probably)would find me,but i have found a way in tho

I very well remember the Endwood - on a summer;s day would walk up from St Mary's Church to meet dad and mom where I was treated to a grapfruit and a bag of crisps

The Endwood

The Endwood, now that was a posh pub! Remember the TocH place next to it?
I used to play up the gully near there, on the railway bank (yes, well...). No fear of paedophiles or murderers then! My dad used the Endwood sometimes, after he'd finished his shift at Hockley P.O., I would run out of school (St. Mary's in Church Hill Road) to meet him at the bus stop outside the church. Then it was a lemonade and a packet of crisps and run back before I was missed. I rarely was, I was supposed to walk to Westminster Road school for school dinners, after mom left home. A bottle of pop and a packet crisps tasted far better though!!

A lot of people on here have spoken about pubs in the Nechells area,
Who remembers The Monkey House dont know if this was i correct name im shure it was not
I think Kandor will know

Mossy

pubs of mychildhood

hi there mossy my old mate
Yes you have spelt it right , the monkey house ,
the monkey house pub was in cato street north in nechells
and it was a cider drinking pub
It was half way up cato st,north on the right hand side of the street
mixed in with the old back to back houses
and your old mate mid night and his mrs vera used to drink there
when they lived in nechells
and down the road you had the little pub called the sportsman on the main rd
and a guy called tony whom used to run a pub up on ash road, the pub if i can remember rightly was the three a,s
he left the three a,s at some stage in the 80,s and went to the pelham
he then left the pelham and moved down to the sports man
which was at the bottom of cato st north ,and on the main rd
all the buss,s stop out side the sports man from the city ,
i don,t know wether its still there ,co,s i don,t live in brum any more
left years ago
have a nice day mossy . astonian ;;;;;;
