I'm sure that The Parasol was on the corner of Hill St. and John Bright St. Did it turn into Sam Weller's or was that another pub next door?
I think I spent virtually every night of the early/mid seventies in Bogarts.
Hi
I believe that Sam Wellers came after the amalgamation of 2 pubs on the same site. One was The Parasol and the other was I think, The Gluepot which were under the Casino. Both were, at the time, downstairs bars but separate to each other. I think they knocked the wall through to make one bar - Sam Wellers.
A little further down on the same side was The Grapes opposite the entrance to the old New St Station car park ramp on the corner of Hill St/Lower Severn St. Last I saw it was a convenience store but that was many years ago. Bogarts (towards top of New St) was indeed scaffolding and bean bags/cushions for seats - great place, vibe and music - often with up and coming live bands. The bier keller was underneath Bogarts downstairs.
Sadly another 2 pubs have gone - The Cabin and Costermonger (with it's famous shuffleboard) to make way for inner city flats.....
.....and planners call this progress allegedly.
If I was to go back to Bham now I doubt I will really recognise it and feel it would be upsetting to the Bham I remember.
Update 13 October 2026
I have found the book I have been looking for - called Brum pubs from 1976. It contains my own scribbles and need to amend the previous post thus:
Sam Wellers on Hill St was formerly The Gluepot but The Parasol changed to Kaleidoscope.
The old Yates Wine Bar (great night out) opposite what was C&A at the station end of Corporation St became the Wimpy burger bar.
The bombed Tavern in the Town became Teddy's before it became the Yard of Ale.
This book is a little gem TBH and I am happy to assist any pubs from the past in the city centre and outlying areas from Northfield, Selly Oak through to Sutton Oldfield that are mentioned - 268 of them. Sadly it does not have an ISBN number to get a copy but does have a Publishers address in Bristol.
Please feel free to make contact and I'll do what I can to assist.
