Parisian Club Cannon Street

This photograph brought back memories of the cold wet rain filled autumns / winters of the seventies. Note The Foster Brothers tartan jacket (complete with nylon wool) the chap on the right is wearing. I spent quite a few weekends in this pub. In the eighties Davenport's bought it and renamed it Cagney's (I suppose to compete against Bogart's on New St) Cagney's was much smaller and the bar was downstairs. It was a pub but it was done out like a nightclub, covered in mirrors, it reflected (forgive the pun) the gaudiness of the eighties I suppose. Try as I might, I haven't found anything about Cagney's but I still live in hope.

The girl in the doorway putting her hood up looks so much like my wife.

I remember a Birmingham DJ called Bilbo Baggins I don't know where he played in Brum but he used to play at The Sportsman Arms, in Allesley, Coventry. On The Coventry/Birmingham Road. I think he was in a band I will get more info. Is it OK on this thread?

The older group of lads that I tagged on to who had cars used to go to a Birmingham night club called Rebecca's. They said Brummie's were much more friendly and I adhere strongly to that but I was always afraid of not being able to get home if one of them got off/pulled! So I never went!

Yep, I remember it well, it was up one of those side Streets on New Street, maybe Needless Alley.

But it was just a pub that had a DJ, not a NightClub you had to leave at 10:30 like all Brum pubs back then!
Yes it was up Needless Alley off New Street. It was a pub with a DJ. You went downstairs to it and then it was on two levels. I spent many happy Saturday nights there probably late 60’s early 70’s

The Fillibuster was the pub that was on the corner opposite the Snow Hill car park (The Royal Angus Hotel was just around the corner from it). It changed its name to The West End Bar and was closed down by the police in December 2000. On the same side, if you walked up towards Lloyd House, there was a pub there called UB's, owned by members of UB40. It was a pub before they owned it, anyone remember what it was called?
Hi Barr Beacon it was called Fanny's i think it was a Pub Restaurant .

That was it! Memories coming back to me now trying to suppress adolescent sniggers as I walked by it with my girlfriend.
I'm sure I went to a bar once under The Filibuster called 'The Bodega', can you shed any light on that?

Fanny's later became UB's (I think some of the band members bought it), I went in there a few times but The Bodega was under The Filibuster. I only went in there once and seem to remember it was decorated like a traditional Spanish bar with the ends of large barrels stuck on the walls. I only went in there because I was surprised to find it was open. This would have been in 1980.

yes the pub under the fili slightly to the right was fannys...i used both back in the day

The Parisien changed to Le Pub at some time in the 80,s..remember, the inside of the parisien was a two floored affair, with the upper floor being a round galleried style arena in order to gawp over the edge and spot someone that you wanted to go and chat to.
Had the balcony around the top I seen to remember,,,

I'm sure that The Parasol was on the corner of Hill St. and John Bright St. Did it turn into Sam Weller's or was that another pub next door?

I think I spent virtually every night of the early/mid seventies in Bogarts.
Hill st,, wasn't that the golden eagle...?

Great thread this. It takes me right back. The Windsor, Parisian and Parasol were very often our Saturday night crawl. I had not known that it was previously a Post & Mail building, or had perhaps forgotten (too many Saturday nights maybe ;)).

I went to Mr Bill's in the 70s / 80s when it sold Lowenbrau Lager and the music was the "Oggy, oggy oi" variety of German music, not the heavy metal music on the flyer/poster. The photograph to the right of the poster/ flyer shows Needless Alley (in the 70's?). The entrance to Mr Bills is behind the lamppost on the right. On the the sign 'Lowenbrau' can clearly be seen and underneath that, the 'B' of Bier and ''K' of Keller.

The Parisian in Cannon St was bought by Davenport's Brewery from M & B. The top floor by the entrance was redeveloped for commercial premises but the basement was brightly lit and covered in mirrors and was opened as a pub called Cagney's (maybe Davenport's wanted to cash in on the success of Bogart's in New St?). I used Cagney's regularly in the mid 80's as I loved Davenport's Continental Lager. I've mentioned Cagney's before but I seem to be the only one who remembers it. Today, I struck gold, I've found a photograph from 1984. The name 'Cagney's' and 'Davenport's can be seen.

I used to work at the Parisienne in the early 70's .I worked there with a friend,we were seen as a bit of a novelty as we came all the way from Walsall!!(Banks's to M&B eh?) Great memories there in our black lace up dresses with white chiffon blouses under. Always adding lace to the dresses as they were so short. My friend met her husband there and they are still happily married.(By the way I think the queue outside was partly caused because the pub was underground and the Doormen had to be strict with the numbers. I think they had click counters) Happy days-Work all day/barmaid at night and then Barbarellas until 2am)
