OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

This was a school pupils in the 5th year at Archbishop Master School, it did not have pupils beyond that and the few that had further scholastic education needed to find another school that would take them and that would depend on their performance on O-level GCSEs and or CSEs. The school was demolished as the post WW2 'baby bulge' passed by. I moved to St Philips School for A-levels in 1968 and then on to University College London for a chemistry BSc... and on & on & on!

We have now moved into 1993 and this is the Old Holte pub, at the time looking as though it had seen better days. Grand building but sad to see it all boarded up.

EDIT : From Keith R - 1st picture shows houses along Witton Lane, all gone now. Dont know if Villa bought them all up to extend the stand or not. Used to be the chippy near this end..it might be the building in the picture and terrace houses further along . Used to go to matches on my Honda 90 and park in a blokes back garden here for a fee. But no idea how I found out this was possible, One of life's mysteries.

Yes Steve we look at these closed pubs now and promptly although with feeling we say " Oh well that's another one gone " . What we seem to forget is with all the customers that have come and gone and all that chat that went into great pubs like The Holte they ain't just pubs "They're Institutions "

Remember these? I have many more as I was born in 1947 and everything that I held so dear is now so much out of date. I remember mum used to say 'during the war' and I used to think 'time gone'

Not sure what the second one is for. The chip pan is still around, though now electrically heated, for thos ethgta want real chips and not oven confections. Came across the first modern equivalent of the third other day, where a card causes the extraction of 40p from your account

the old cap gun and the go cart took me back...dad was always making them for us kids and my brother always had a cap gun as for the old chip pan to my mind is the only way to cook decent home made chips...

I had gun with explosive caps, I also made use of cotton reels - large and small. They were used as Barbara stated and also for "corking". See BHF thread for a description for those not old enough to remember.

Many years ago we had a chip pan of type shown but a french type was chosen when we renewed our cooking pans and utensils.

ought to be a guessing game of things from long ago
So sad with the polio machines. I note the last person in USA needing a machine died last week. I think Morris Motors made many thousands of these machines. Changing the subject, I am familiar with the SETRIGHT bus ticket machine, but this one seems different, any ideas?

I like it Lady P. :D
Thinking of Al's a few came to mind. Al Bowlly - singer killed in 1941 by a bomb during WW2, Al Lewis - lyricist and grandpa in Munsters, Al Murray - comedian, Al Jolson, Al Pacino, many Americans on stage and in politics called Al, Al Capone and from the Ted Ray Show was Al K. Traz - who was an American comedian, to name but a few, mainly of yesteryear: well this is a history Forum after all.
There is, of course myself, who is known as Al in some quarters.
