OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

We have now crossed the road and are now in Heath Mill Lane - looking down to the junction with Digbeth and we have the Crown on the left
Looking like any old pub but not forgetting this is in the middle of birmingham and has survived everything thrown at it - both war and planners !!!

This may or may not be correct - my rather vague list states building in Fazeley Street, but no mention of it been a former Church - thats what it looks like . seems a hole has been knocked through the wall to make and entrance on the right had side - ( Shocking) but at least its still there. Like the cobbled surface to the entrance too.

Next picture is included as it may mean something to someone, looking boarded and bricked up on the ground floor but still surviving further up, love all the different architectural feature - mouldings shapes and niches - for what is a standard factory - giant steel framed windows too.

The next image is pretty similar however as its a slightly wider shot and shows how the houses are almost underneath the viaduct. Only shame is the change to the upstairs window of the nearest house
Forgot to add these pictures were all taken in 1991.

As an aside put this picture into an app that produces pencil sketches from pictures. Obviously an interpretation.

We are now in River Street ( 28/29?) a back street unit offereing televisions ( to the trade!!) a close look above street level shows a job lot of window frames seem to have been bought considering the amount of work taken to convert the old arched window frames to hold the new square ones.

Hi, to me this looks like Heath Mill Street - The first public library in Digbeth, Birmingham, is The Old Library (originally Deritend Library), which opened on October 26 1866. It was one of Birmingham's original five free libraries and is the only one of those originals still standing. It closed in 1940 and is now a venue and also a wedding venue as well.

Good morning apologies for the gap in posts, lot happened , but I will try and continue posting. I did notice a number of replies from Dionysus, I will get around to reading and commenting but I thought a concerted effort to post would be more helpful, especially when you see how long I have had these scans and I still have not posted them all - sorry Lyn
We are still on roll 71 , and carrying on from the last post we are now looking down Fazeley Street, I think we have turned around, still lots of the old buildings remaining, but some have been knocked around with advert boards attached to them - from my information we are in 1992 - frightening that this is over 25 years ago !!

Next picture forms a theme as this was closed the week before - its The Avenue, Aston Street North, as you can see it is still intact, I assume it is / was on the corner of Avenue Road - if so it did not have long to last as it was in the way of the redevelopment of the road network .
Shame as all the lamps signs windows are all intact.

This is an interesting sign - showing the site where Arthur Conan Doyle lived , I cannot add to this as my noted read - old sign Aston Road North, but I suppose its good that it was still there, although a hunt on Street view and I could not see it.
EDIT: See the post from Brummy Lad #2,157.

We now have a bit of time travel to 1964 and a view of what this area looked like, and what was lost - lots of three and four storey buildings, all individual shops - Baines further down - shop with a Kodak sign outside and the old area sign on the roadside for Aston. I also note there is a total lack of people and traffic - imaging that today !! Can I assume it is a Sunday?

We now move onto Roll 72 and something different to start and may be of use to someone although the information provided is a bit vague, with that I mean could be incorrect- just seems strange that his surname is Aston- could it be Frank from Aston ?!

My information reads Frank Aston sent home to his mom.

This information is a recap for newcomers, I scanned a lot of negatives of these old images - see the initial post for more information, this is a negative of a picture of a photo of a picture - still with me - and explains the number of images I post - those who know would expect 36 images on a film roll ( yes you can get 24 image rolls) but to get a picture correct the photographer took an number of pictures - in this case 4 - and with the previous picture having 3 three we are 7 photos in for 2 images !!- sorry rambling there .
My information come in a type written sheet which can be vague - incorrect or added to years later .
So we have " looking down a street somewhere in Aston 1959/60 " with hand written addition " Guilford Street from Park Street "

Amazing image on so many level - the street scene - hardly any traffic, old style street lamps, social history moms and children walking - it seems to be summer but there is a big long coat and the man walking up the road with a jacket and his cap on.

apologies the skewed image - shows what I have to start with but also if I straighten it I lose the building at the top and with it the rough idea of the location - top end of Suffolk Street and Great Charles street tunnel - constructed by what looks like " cut and shut" dig a big hole, build a tunnel section then dig another hole and fill the previous hole in . Show the massive engineering to get the tunnel through the centre of Birmingham.

This picture is an old printers shop in Garrison Lane seems to be on its way out, no windows tiles off the roof and the old red and white wooden barriers keeping people away, saddest part is not the state of the building but the price of petrol those are gallon prices of which there are 4.54609 litres to a gallon. :sob:

Fabulous photo, Steve! I think this is Aston Road North, with Aston Brook Street on the left. You can just make out the flat roof of the Rippingille factory in the distance.

We now move across to the Jewellery Quarter and Legge Lane - these are a selection of old buildings but I am not sure which are left these days. Nice three storey building with ornate frontage to the top , further along are more old style industrial building all with some age.

20230114152500_07.jpg

we now look across the road at a few building that seem rather sad, Barrowclift has the windows boarded up and the building to the right has the top floor windows bricked up and the there doesn't seem to be much happening.

I think this IS Guildford St - but from Farm St not Park St. Geach St is on the right by the lampost, and where the houses are indented opposite Geach St is where I lived as a kid (at 1/39). Closer to the camera on the left my gran lived at 2/27. And towards the top of the hill on the right my aunt lived at (I think) no 90. Please correct me if I am wrong as I was only 5 when we left and that was a LONG time ago.........
