OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

We have now crossed the road and are now in Heath Mill Lane - looking down to the junction with Digbeth and we have the Crown on the left
Looking like any old pub but not forgetting this is in the middle of birmingham and has survived everything thrown at it - both war and planners !!!

Turning around and we have this old terrace of houses - still in Heath Mill Road , clinging on with only a few doors boarded up and no windows
Imagine the sound of the trains passing over the viaduct that have gone over the years .

The next image is pretty similar however as its a slightly wider shot and shows how the houses are almost underneath the viaduct. Only shame is the change to the upstairs window of the nearest house
Forgot to add these pictures were all taken in 1991.

A quick return to the corner of the road for a close up look at the Crown Inn, looking slightly worse for wear with windows boarded and posters stuck over them - and does not really tell the actual age of the building.

This may or may not be correct - my rather vague list states building in Fazeley Street, but no mention of it been a former Church - thats what it looks like . seems a hole has been knocked through the wall to make and entrance on the right had side - ( Shocking) but at least its still there. Like the cobbled surface to the entrance too.

Next picture is included as it may mean something to someone, looking boarded and bricked up on the ground floor but still surviving further up, love all the different architectural feature - mouldings shapes and niches - for what is a standard factory - giant steel framed windows too.

We are now in River Street ( 28/29?) a back street unit offereing televisions ( to the trade!!) a close look above street level shows a job lot of window frames seem to have been bought considering the amount of work taken to convert the old arched window frames to hold the new square ones.

Just edited the wording to the picture - now reads Heath Mill Lane !!

It was one of Birmingham's original five free libraries and is the only one of those originals still standing. It closed in 1940 and is now a venue and also a wedding venue as well.

hi elaine and yes you are correct its the old free library however just to correct its on heathmill lane not street below is todays st view
