We were visiting Filongley, nr Atherstone back in 2008 and as we got out of the car a lovely GSD puppy appeared. Turned out she had been dumped/abandoned. She went to the local animal rescue for a week and wasn't claimed. Rescue rang us and asked us if we would like to adopt her - no disk, no microchip!
We jumped at the chance and brought her home. Our vet said she was about 17 weeks old and would have been born about 25th Jan - the day our previous dog passed away! Fate, can't help but feel we were meant to have her. We named her Bella.

Bella was an incredible dog [aren't they all!]. Friendly, intelligent, and inseparable from me. We were blessed to have 13 wonderful years together but late in 2021 she was showing her age and on 7 Jan 2022 she quietly died at home in the night. Four years ago but still in my heart.

They certainly leave a huge gap in your life but live on forever in your heart.
Lucky Bella, she had a wonderful home with you, I wish they were all so lucky.

Thanks for that. I have a strong affinity with dogs. I was bought up with racing greyhounds belonging to my uncle and grandfather. We raced at Hall Green and Perry Bar mainly. I know that dog racing is now considered a bad thing but at my young age I just loved the dogs. Later when I started working away from home I would not have a dog because it would have been practically abandoned for long periods but I did
miss them. After retiring I rescued lurcher Red (picture) from local RSPCA kennels and called him Reg. As you say, a wonderful companion. I live in the countryside and I loved to see him running free in the fields. There is nothing like the sight of a running dog at full chase around 25 mph. He was about 2 years old in the picture and he maintained his athletic shape for the rest of his life. He died about a year ago at age 15. No fuss, just lay down for a day or two and expired at the vets. I find it difficult now with no dog but at 78 I think it could be cruel to take on a pup. I take over any dog that visits with my jar of Bonio biscuits. I was wondering if it might be good to have a dog forum for all things doggy. Bella was lovely and perhaps she's playing with Reg somewhere if only in my imagination.
