Mom's 'Cures'

Di.Poppitt

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Vic was one of mom's favourite remedy's. If we had a cold we were plastered with it.

Another was the bread poultice. Bread was soaked in HOT water, mixed into a paste and slapped onto the offending place. It was meant to 'draw', it drew tears because it burned.

Codliver oil and malt was delicious, lovley treacly spoonsful of heaven. It probably didn't do the teeth a lot of good though.

My Mom used on me for a Headache, would you beleive VINAGAR soaked BROWN PAPER on my forehead. I think she may have thought I was Jack or was it Jill! LOL ;D
ASTON

Yes, I remember those big jars of malt extract - my mom used to make me have a spoonful every day as a child. One of her 'cures' for earache was to put a piece of onion in my ear when I went to bed.
It was of absolutely no use whatsoever!! but you don't argue with mom - do you ??? LOL

Vinagar & Brown Paper, for a headache thats what my Mom used to put on my forehead.
May be she thought I was JACK or was it JILL. ???

All this talk of COD LIVER OIL & MALT reminds me of the Boots Chemist on the corner of Park Lane ,Aston Road just by Timsons shoe shop. All them demijohns full of colored liquids & draws & draws of pills stacked up to the ceiling. It was a place to cure all. :P

Heres another .. ear ache warm olive oil , ewe :buck2: the smell was horrid.

Kaolin poltice........................ouch :'(

Beladonna plaster.................ouch, OUCH :'(

I dont know how to spell this so here goes, yellow bazelica think it was used to draw out boils? anyone else heared of it??? :-\

Blackjack if you cut your knees and got gravel in the cut... this was supposed to 'draw' it out as well.

Boots still sells this - think its proper name is icthamol.. this was the thick black smelly stuff.

My mom remembers her mom gathering nettles at 4 in the morning to make nettle tea 'for the blood'. My nan also swore by goose fat smeared on your chest with a square of muslin slapped over the top... pooh did we moan about that :'(

Yeah Aston - Colmans mustard bath - my great gran used to swear by that and she lived to the age of 90. She also swore by a wrap of Beecham's Powders

Janny

God it's all flooding back... that black smelly stuff was also known (I think) as Zambuck!!!

When I say thick I mean thick... and it stained your clothes

Anyone remember the flat round bottles of smelling salts.. we used to take a sniff of my nan's - nearly knocked us out, never mind clearing the head (I also remember doing the same with my uncle's snuff but that's another story!).

YELLOW BAZELICA cum on you lot, someone must have heared of it :-\ :-\

Hot coke ( from the fire place ) put in a cup of water then taken out and the water drank.
Anyone remember what it cured ?

Angie only playing ya up. Basil'icon was a name of several ointments the cheif ingredient of which was wax, pitch, resin and olive oil .................hows that O0

If we had wax in our ears, mom would pour hydrogen? peroxide in, we had to hold our head to one side for a few minutes, the potion would bubble up in the ear, but seemed to do the trick and melt the wax.
