Laptop Memory Upgrade

AnnS

master brummie
My laptop has slowed down considerably of late and probably could do with some additional memory (RAM).

I currently have 8gb of RAM installed and was thinking of adding an extra 8gb.

My question is can i use any brand of RAM for my machine and would it be easy to install.

Any advice would be much appreciated..

Not all memory modules are compatible or equal and some computers you cannot add anymore either. The supplier Crucial have a tool that you can download that will scan your system and offer you some options to upgrade. https://www.crucial.com/

Crucial don’t now sell direct but get the serial number of the recommended modules and but off amazon. I did my laptop a couple of week ago for £10.

There are also a few other tweaks you can do as well as just upgrading if you want some guidance.

Come back if you get stuck.

As you say your laptop has slowed down (rather than has always run slowly) suggests it may be worth doing a bit of 'housekeeping' - i.e. removing clutter and checking that you are not running unnecessary programs in the background. Before I go into details, are you running Windows and if so which version?

I did as jukebox suggested about two months ago, a “tune up”, We have a service that protects our printer, tablets, notebooks etc. it was done remotely and took about 20 minutes. My computer, a Lenovo runs as fast as it ever did without adding parts. Worth a try!

To do a safe tidy-up click Start and in the search box at the top type Disk Cleanup. All the options can be selected unless you don’t want to empty your recycle bin.

Check that your hard drive has plenty of space left. I guess you have a fairly modern laptop and your storage is an SSD (solid state drive). If you have the older type of SATA drive it may need defragmenting but don’t attempt to defragment an SSD.

Right click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. Then click Startup Apps. Most can be disabled (it won’t stop them from running if you want them to) but don’t disable anything to do with security or anti-virus.

Adding Memory can be simple or otherwise! Some laptops have a removable panel on the base for accessing the memory sticks. Others necessitate removing the keyboard!

I hope this is helpful. Do contact if you have any further questions.

If you think want to add memory you might want to check with your local computer shop or manufacturer, many newer computers (which you seem to have running 11) inhibit the addition of memory.

The Microsoft Edge computers are like that, no additional memory or hard drives and eveything is solderd in.

Dell Inspiron 3505 so should be ok for upgrade, will check with crucial to make sure.

I do wonder if you can mix different manufacturers memory cards, will have to find out.

Thanks again folks, much appreciated...

My Lenovo is like that........when I was buying it the fellow advised if I thought I might need more to upgrade. The upgrade was on sale, so I got more memory for the same money. One of the few times I actually came out ahead, usually it's the other way :) , far better than buying an new one.
