Icknield Street

Lovely pic Lyn, I wonder what year that was taken, because the Walter Smith butchers shop used to be Stoddards when I lived down there. You said you used to get the No 8 bus to go roller skating at Springhill rink. I used to walk there to go Ice skating in the late 50's.

Stoddards Lyn, where my dad worked up until his death in 1962. I bet I knew that lady walking with her pram, as lived just a little way up from the van. The shop to the right of Stoddards was a general household type shop, sold towels, aprons, bedding, nightdresses etc etc., I remember buying a lovely scarf from there. Where the lady is walking with the pram was Stoddards grocery shop, where they used to have two mounds of butter one Danish and one New Zealand, they used to just cut a chunk off and put it onto the scales. It had a wooden floor, and the shop always had a delicious smell of food.

lovely memories there maggs...i remember you saying that your dad worked at stoddards...sorry there is no date to the pic you mentioned...must say my days at the rollar rink were happy ones...i would still be there now if it was still going lol..

Yes Lyn, I thought the same thing about the crashed bus. The turning there off Spring Hill into Icknield St was quite sharp. Looking at the pram on the Stoddards pic, I would date it late 50's early 60's. What do you think?

just had a good look maggs and yes i would put the date in the early to late 50s...poss 60s but hard to be sure...but i would think it was taken when your dad worked there..

lyn

maggs ive zoomed in on the stoddards pic and there is a lady customer in the shop and it look to me like a man serving...dark hair and wearing a white coat..

oh im so pleased stars...not usually good at directions lol...i did have a pic of the the old tunnel in icknield st..do you remember it...used to scare me to death walking through it with our mom on our way to spring hill shops...i will see if i can locate it...

stars thats a new one on me...great pic...but its not the one im looking for..this one is a longer shot looking in the opposite direction to your pic but it also shows more of the railway offices that were on the left...think it was taken in the 50s...will keep searching but that pic has taken me back a few years i can tell you..

I also remember going under that bridge often, to go to the flat. I also hated it, especially when a train went over, Id rush through as fast as I could. We were told that it had stalagnite's (spelling) hanging which were what dripped. However, they are great photo's and wonderful memories, so thank you to you all for putting them on here. Lyn, I believe you are right about the pic of Stoddards, it would have been mid to late 50's.

hi maggs im sure you are right about the stalagtites in the back of my mind im sure this is what i saw too..i think the others are called stagamites and the easy way to remember which is which is that tights come down lol...

We used to throw bangers under there on bonfire night and then run for our lives. Stalagmites - ground. Stalactites - ceiling, thats how I remember.

Oh that made me smile Lyn, I shall remember that in future. I could say something cheeky here, but I won't in case I get banned. Did we have the stalagmites as well under the bridge? I bet with all the walking that went on under there, they wouldn't have survived. I really did hate those things dripping on me though, and it was so hard to avoid it wasn't it?

Lyn, on pic #291, the shop on the corner where the car is, on the left, used to be a barber shop, and my dad always had his hair cut there. The newsagent on the left, was Howards.

its great that you remember this area so well maggs...not sure if we had stalagmites under the bridge but it wernt half damp and scarey lol..
