Herbert Edgar Vincent

kah

Flamenco Brummie
My great great uncle Edgar Vincent Herbert was born in Appleford, Berkshire in 1880 but is living with his wife, Florence Miriam in Sparkbrook in 1911. In 1914 he signs up for the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Ontario and I think he might have been on a ship from Southampton to New York in 1930. I'm pretty sure he died in his 80's back in Berkshire.

Could anyone help with possible overseas records and, more generally, how common would this to-ing and fro-ing have been in those days?? (as far as I know he did'nt have a lot of money)

Many thanks

Re: Help with Atlantic hopping Herbert!!

many thanks Mike - so maybe he moved to Canada then at some point crossed to the USA then came home! (I had clearly got the Southampton to NY the wrong way 'round). Wonder what happened to his wife? More answers ... more questions!!!! Karenanne

Re: Help with Atlantic hopping Herbert!!

Edgar Vincent Herbert / Florence Miriam Collett marriage registered 1st quarter 1906 Aston vol 6d page 384
She was born 4th quarter 1879 Cardiff (vol 11a page 256).
Edgar's birth is registered 2nd quarter 1879 Abingdon (which includes Appleford) vol 2c page 296.
I can find no death for Florence in the England and Wales BMD registers.

The Folkestone address was probably Shellons Street. it is almost all new property now.

Re: Help with Atlantic hopping Herbert!!

Oh thanks Lloyd. I smiled when I saw the surname Collett., Although its a Cardiff birth, it's another 'big' family name in Appleford. My family all seem to marry in very small circles!! K

Re: Help with Atlantic hopping Herbert!!

Surprisingly, it was not at all uncommon for the 'more adventurous' to travel back and forth. We were in the midst of Empire and any 'likely lad' could travel just about anywhere in search of fame, fortune and adventure - or, just to get away from tedium, or a nagging wife even! It was common to 'work' one's 'passage' so money was no object to travel in those days.

My father's great uncle Tom ran away at the age of ten to join the army as a drummer boy...in his early twenties he left the army, whilst in India; and travelled all over the world, working as he went : South East Asia, China, America, Canada, the Middle East, Africa, and finally Australia, where he 'panned for gold' - unfortunately, he was ship-wrecked and drowned, on his return journey to Britain!

Although many people never went further than the next village, many travelled far more extensively than to day.

I can see this is a very old message, almost 15 years ago, but I wonder how you got on in your search. I came across a little book belonging to your great great uncle. I often find old books and if there is a name and address in it I cannot resist some research to see if I can discover some history behind the books journey. Normally very little or nothing comes to light, but on this occasion I was very surprised to find a lot of information available of E V Herbert. In book note gave me hope as it was given as E V Herbert SGT RGT 18th Canadian. As a veteran myself I knew i might be onto something i did some research and tracked down your great great uncles military record. See below.
Regimental number: 53988
Highest Rank: Sergeant-Major (18th Battalion)
Rank detail
Sergeant-Major, 18th Battalion, Infantry (Army).
Degree of service: Europe
Survived war: yes

I can also tell you the following about Edgar that was recorded at the time on his military record:

PERSONAL INFORMATION

Name: Herbert, Edgar Vincent
Date of birth: 1880-04-09
Place of birth: Appleford Berkshire England
Next of kin: Mrs. Florence Herbert C/O Mrs. Webb C.P.R. Trenton, Ontario, Canada
Marital status: married
Occupation (attested): Cook
Occupation (normalized): Cook, Except Private Service
Religion: Church of England
Date of death: 1965-07-06

Unfortunately there is a sad moment in Edgar's life relating to his wife Florence who was lost when her ship the Lusitania was sunk by German subs on her voyage to join her husband who had been posted to the UK during the war. You can read it yourself if you so chose at the below web page or just search it up in google.

Finally if you are still pursuing some of your family history, I would be happy to pass you on the book for free. Being able to return an old soldier's personal belongings to his family would be an honour. The book is a pocket book of quotes from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations and it appears that he was in his possession around 1922 so after the loss of his wife. So I have hoped that the book brought him some stoic comfort and peace.

Sorry - one other interesting fact about your Great Great Uncle Edgar Vincent Herbert. He is laid to rest in All Saints Churchyard in Sutton Courtenay. Some people may know this place already, for it is also the resting place of George Orwell of 1984 Fame. I find I quaint irony in the fact that the owner of one book has brought me to his resting place besides the resting place of the author of many other books.
