Help With Rellies Seamans Records

Lyn,

When I used to visit old parish churches there was generally a guest book and I always use to used to leave my name and contact details in the forlorn hope that someone researching the same family might visit and contact me. It did eventually pay off in Spelsbury, Oxfordshire, and someone sent loads of information, so you never know.

there is a tree on ancestry for millicent gibson that says that she only had the one child...thomas wood my gt gt gt grandad...she would have had him when she was about 19..most unusal in those days to only have one child..maybe she could not have anymore or did she died very young?? so far i can find no trace of either millicent or hubby john wood on the 41 or 51 census..

Lyn,

I think it is reasonably safe to assume her death occurred prior to the onset of Civil Registration in 1837. The only one I found born in or near 1785 died in Bingham, Notts in 1874, a widow who was born in the same area according to the 1871 Census. Unless her husband's death preceded her and she remarried and then we are in the Land of the Unprovable!

The only other Millicent Wood death I could find was a burial on 12 June 1834 at St James, Longnor Staffs., at the age of 52, which would make her birth date 1782. Again unprovable.

I couldn't find a viable Millicent Wood on any of the censuses either. It's likely that she died in either Derbyshire or Staffordshire. Joseph is going to be even more difficult to trace - there are so many of them. I'll carry on doing a little digging, but unless we have a lot of luck........

I never believe any online family trees unless I can prove them to my own satisfaction!

Maurice

hi maurice agree with you on all counts...the other one im looking for is john wood millicents hubby..joseph gibson was her dad..although having said that anything on any of them would be useful....i also take ancestrys family trees with a pinch of salt...best to check and double check...many thanks to everyone who is helping me i really appreciate it

Another interesting item at Heanor St Lawrence. There are some images of BT's, burials (1798-1812) and baptisms (`1798-1812) buried on familysearch which you can only get at by being a free member. I'm noting any WOODs and GIBSONs and will email them to you later tomorrow. None of the people we want yet, but just found this baptism - 2 September 1807 Eliza WOOD illegitimate daughter of Millicent. So was she having a bit of "Hanky panky" or had her husband died by then. I haven't found his burial between 1798 and 1812. There are no images of marriages for this period as far as I can see.

Lyn,

There's the burial of a John WOOD aged 32 on 2 May 1806 at St Lawrence Heanor. If this is Millicent's hubby then he can't be the father of her illegitimate child UNLESS the child was at least 8 months old when she was christened. That would account for the only legitimate son being Thomas. AND did the illegitimate daughter Eliza die a few days after she was christened as there is an Infant WOOD with no forename buried on 11 September 1807? The only thing strange about that is that the Vicar would have known that he christened her Eliza only a week before. But otherwise it fits.

Maurice

many thanks maurice i shall look forward to your email...if that is my millicent with illegitimate child she could have named her after her mother elizabeth...the plot thickens..

thank you maurice i will jot down that baptism..

maurice if that is my john wood who died in 1806 would it say on his burial records husband of millicent??..will check emails later on..

No, Lyn, these are B.T.s and there is no other information other than age and sometimes not even that. These are held by Derby Record Office at Matlock. It is possible that the originals did not survive. I can send you the image if you want.

Maurice

The baptisms for 1751-1755 are a copy made on parchment by the Vicar before he left for a new church in Nottinghamshire! He took them with him and they were retrieved later.

Maurice

So we now need Heanor St Lawrence Burials after 1812 and up to 1837 if they exist. Marriages too if we don't find her death as she just could have remarried.

Marrice

morning maurice....am i right in thinking the st lawrence burials and marriages are held at derby record office matlock..i would love to find out if the john wood buried at st lawrence church in 1806 is my 4x gt grandad.. as you say i could also do with finding out if millicent re married and anymore info on the infant wood also buried at st lawrence may be useful...

lyn

Good morning Lyn,

Yes, that is my understanding, but I am sure you will check before making that long journey. I'm out this morning, but will check the LDS catalogue later. If they have them then they should exist!

Maurice

ok thanks maurice in the mean time i will see if there is anything else i can turn up...it does seem strange though that the infant wood was buried with no first name

lyn

Hi Lyn,

In addition to the BTs that are online, it looks as if everything except old Banns have survived and should be in Derbyshire Record Office. The full list can be found here:-
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/1857926?availability=Family History Library
However, they will be on microfilm and you may need to reserve a reader. That's not to say that they will give you any more information that we already know. Marriage records pre-1813 are particularly devoid of details and much the same applies to Burial Records.

Maurice

thanks maurice before i think about going to the record office i want to do a bit more research..still find it strange that if the baby wood burial was millicents daughter eliza why they did not state her first name..onward and upward:D

Lyn,

I have no idea, and I am sure that we will never find out. Going back another generation, the only marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth in Derbyshire between 1750 and 1775 is this one:-
6 September 1762 Thomas WOOD to Elizabeth HANSON at Smalley
and Smalley is a little place less than 2 miles south west of Heanor, so this seems quite likely. Here's details of the Smalley parish records at Derbyshire Record Office, Matlock, covering this marriage:-
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/383597?availability=Family History Library
That leaves about 13 years before the birth of John when other children could be born, all siblings of John's and likely included in the list I sent you as parents themselves, e.g. Samuel & Ruth, etc. I'll have another dig.

Maurice

The Wood burial cannot be the same as the Eliz Wood christening as the burial is 11 Sept and the christening is 22 Sept!!
Not sure if this has been put before but there is a 1810 marriage in Heanor of Edward Smith to Milicent Wood. No image for this one though.

Janice,

Well-spotted - with no forename, let's not worry about an anonymous WOOD burial. But it does seem that Millicent WOOD re-married and he could have been the father of the illegitimate child. Because there are no marriage images online for Heanor, I hadn't got around to looking at the marriages. SMITH of all names !!!!!!!!!

The further you go back the harder it becomes to be certain of anything. Looking at possible children of John's parents, I've come up with this list, but this throws up a problem of it's own as we have another John christened in 1782.......
These are all children of Thomas & Elizabeth WOOD
17 July 1763 Sarah WOOD at Smalley
17 July 1763 Mary WOOD at Smalley ..................most probably twins
7 February 1766 Elizabeth WOOD at Smalley
23 February 1772 Patience WOOD at Heanor
10 April 1774 John WOOD at Heanor, who married Milicent
15 March 1777 Phillis WOOD at Heanor
25 December 1780 Henry WOOD at Heanor
28 July 1782 John WOOD at Heanor

Following their marriage at Smalley in 1762, it seems that they lived there until sometime between 1766 and 1772 when they moved back to Heanor. But who on earth is this second John when the other one is still alive and didn't marry Milicent until 1803?

For the moment I am taking a break!

Maurice

hi janice see post 126..maurice says the bapt for eliza was on 2nd of sept..its ok just read previous post..will discount that unknown burial...as you say maurice who is this second john wood...janice thank you for the marr of millicent wood to edward smith:D 1810..i cant keep up now:rolleyes:

I will double check this as it was taken off the image and some images were cropped a bit close to the edges.

It must be more than 6th but looks more like 21. Remember that these are BTs and may have been corrected by LDS staff. I think Janice is right, Lyn.

Janice, the entry before it is on 6th so it must be twenty something.

Lyn, from FMP:-
Edward SMITH born 1776, buried 1 April 1821 age 45 at Heanor
Millicent SMITH died 3rd Qtr 1837 Belper Reg Dist Vol 19 Page 210 aged 51 buried at Ripley (5 miles north of Heanor) - at least you can get a certificate for this one but whether it will tell you much apart from cause of death & informant and possibly relict of Edward Smith would be nice!

Maurice

once again many thanks maurice and janice...cant believe how far back you have gone for me...maurice could you just confirm that the baptism for john wood 1774 at st lawrence church.. parents thomas and elizabeth is the correct one for me because if so thomas and elizabeth are my 5x gt grandparents....i think i may get the death cert for millicent..
