This is the Hamstead Road toll, painted by W.Green in the early/mid 1800s. Viv.

Hamstead Road Handsworth

Although the B&W timbered building has a sign "Toll House," but this building wasn't actually the toll house. (See previous posts)
A good view of the park lodge on Hamstead Road - not possible to get the same view on Streetview, but the lodge is still there and seems in good order.
71 Hamstead Road, replaced with new (residential ?) buildings
To the right is Radnor Road
This view still quite similar today.

A couple more. Think I've got the correct location for the first one, but the second photo I'm not sure. I thought it might be by St Marys Church, but can't be certain.
having looked again at my photo post 5 i think the caption is wrong because hamstead road is quite a distance from somerset road.looking at this map the photo could have been taken at either hamstead hill or handsworth wood road..both near to somerset road...no clues as such so doubtful we could pin the location down for certain
Hamstead Hill rather than Hamstead Road perhaps ?

I wondered that too, it made me think of this cottage at the junction although I know it's not. This cottage is actually called The Lodge.
ive found another photo of it looking in better condition and it still says taken in hamstead road so maybe this is correct after all..this says its looking towards hamstead hill

So we need to find a farm on or very close to Hamstead Road. Maybe a map will help.
yes seems that way and looking at the better photo there has to be a bend in the road..looking at this map there is a bend in road opposite the church and a shaded building to the left of the letter O which could be possible although i think its on the wrong side of the road to be looking towards hamstead hill..but its just guess work

That was always my benchmark! I lived just down from there on Radnor Rd.
And me! I lived at 129 Hamstead road in 1960.
is this school still there and i was wondering where abouts on the hamstead road it was

Yes, there is still a school in Hamstead Road, on the other side of the road to the church and a little higher up..

Yes it must have been at some time, we lived in the area from the late 60s and the school looked the same then so the old building would have gone before that.
