Great Russell Street

In the 1912 and 1913 directorioes it is just listed as a beer retailer. It is only later that the name is given . Unfortunately this often happens in some of the older directories. I attach sections of kellys in 1940, which shows tavern is at 199, and 1912 ,which shows it is on the corner of Brideg st west, rather than new john st west (as there is another building between it and NJSW

Ah! That makes sense now Mike. I think I did see a beer retailer listed on my trawl through the census this morning. I shall go back and have another look.

judy..ive found that pic its the one of the compasses pub corner of gt russell and brearley....

its also the same shot as the one you see on the sheet of pics....but with this one as its a seperate pic i can scan it and post on here..that way at least it will enlarge and you can see more of the detail...

That would be great Lyn! I am slowly getting together a picture of Gt Russell Street, and making a note of house numbers and pubs. To see the pub in more detail would be smashing.

My Nan and Grandads family lived on Gt Russell Street, Nan and grandad were neighbours and married 1947 at St Matthius, i've got a pic of Grandads Parents and some family in a pub i think could have been there, there isn't much to the background but it's got floural seats and curtains and looks like a panelled wall at the back, does this sound familiar to anyone? it was taken about 1944.
 
Here you go Lyn..... As you can see there isn't much background, but to the left it looks like a wooden panel section, hopefully someone will recognise it, not that i'm saying your all alkies lol but i date it around 1944 as thats when Grandads brother married and his wife is in the pic so it could have been slightly before that.
 
well claire..they certainly knew how to have a good time in those days...could be anywhere though..but it must be round there or therabouts....

maybe someone will spot the pic and recognise the pub....

Oh they probably did Jayell, most of the pics i have of them they have an alcoholic drink in their hands, uncle Sammy and Grandad were real cases, always playing up and larking about, funny enough he was a Hanson, I see you are researching the name :)

I hope so Lyn it would be interesting to know :)
 
If that is around 1944 then I think, with the panelling and fancy gilded tables, its most likely a hotel rather than an ordinary pub.

hi ya mike..just showed the other half this pic...he said in the 60s when he was a builder he and his mates skipped loads of tables the same as this one and ornate fireplaces out of the ordinary pub.....what a waste...

I dont know if my memory is failing me but wasn't The Compasses on the corner of Brearley St and Gt Hampton Row?

Thanks Lyn,But still cant picture a pub at the junction of Gt Russell St & Brearley St.I remember a chip shop on one corner & Outrams who sold oilcloth, it was also a pawnshop on another corner.

hi mossg...i will try and double confirm this for you as captions can sometimes be wrong and i dont like giving false info especially when it comes to researching family history although i read it was listed as such....

by the way you mention oilcloth..gosh thats takes me back years...i can remember our mom and dad buy that for almost all the house..didnt have wall to wall carpeting in those days...maybe a large rug but that was about it...

hi mossg...no they wernt home made ones...mom use to buy them from either the shops on the lozells road or down wheeler st...we were a large family...6 kids but do you know i cant recall one sad memory...happy days....

I have pondered over this photo many times. Is it looking down to Farm st with Frankfort Stt on left . If so my nan's shop is the remaining building on the left, or is it further up. It looks as if the photo is taken downhill from Bridge St west, but I know a block of flats were built on my nans shop so it would be too near that block on the photo

Going north down Gt Russell St from New John St West,the first yard on the right had 8 houses on its left hand side,on the right hand side were the back gardens to the houses on New John St West.
At the top of the yard(after No8)there was a wall seperating it from a yard that was a mirror image of it.this was entered from Hospital St.The yard that was entered in Hospital St was named Wellington Place.I would guess the Gt Russell St entry had a name as opposed to a court No.I hope this isnt too confuseing.

Thank you Mossg. From your explanation, I can see how the houses ran, and what I thought was one long row of houses with entrances in both Gt. Russell Street and Hospital Street was in fact two separate terraces, one being Wellington Place.

I am still not 100% convinced that this was where Court 25 was. I have been following through the enumerator's route on the 1871 census and it goes from St Georges Place, Gt Hampton Row, Brearley Street the back down Gt Russell Street where Court 25 is (between 249 and 250), and Court 26 (between 253 and 254) then 255, then the school and Church. The enumerator presumable crosses over the road then and he starts at No.1 Gt. Russell Street.

So I now feel that Court 25 was between Tower Street and Brearley Street, unless anyone knows different.

Hi Judy,from what you have explained about the route taken by the enumorator when recording the 1871 census,i think you are right as to court 25 being at the top end of Gt Russell St.
I knew the area well having walked past it on my way to St Georges C of E School in the early 1950s.
I have never seen a photo of it but this picture is looking down Gt Russell St and the court would have been to the right of the church and just yards past the building shown.

Mossg - What a fantastic sketch! I love it! Thanks for posting it. When I look at it closely it to the right of the Church and School, I can imagine Court 25.

I wonder what year the sketch is of. It looks lovely, but in truth when my 2 x gt.granddad died in Court 26 in 1871, it was of Typhoid fever!
