Good point, John, most of them have been sent to me at some time or another so i have no idea where they came from. If they are from one of my books I put the information in the text,i.e. this from the "take heart Birmingham" book.
I thought it was alright to pass on the pictures as long as it wasn't for profit. I will certainly stop straight away as I do not wish to get the site into trouble. :-[

what we do is just say thank you to who ever, we have permission of Carl Chinn, Brewin books, Alton Douglas, Birmingham post and mail, Birmingham Central Library we just stick their name or organization or advertise their products up to yet we have had only a couple of complaints.

I grew up in 9 back of 230 Great Russal Street in Hockly has any one got photos I could see, I have one of the old house but nothing else.

copyright is a grey area some people don't mind where as others come down on you like a ton of bricks my own personal thoughts would be that any one could take copies for there own personal use, we have made deals with certain people and groups and we can use so many with out incurring their wrath. There are laws which can be pressed if you breach copy rights we do have a disclaimer pertaining to site photographs, so it's up to the individual as to what they decide. we can't say take any think you like because some people send us photographs asking us to accept their wishes not to distribute same to other outlets.
If you put any photographs on site that belong to you you can give people the right to copy same but they must be yours.
what makes me mad is the thousands of photographs sitting in dark draws and cupboards never to be seen by the general public I tried to get some released from the library they wanted lots of cash and the you had to wait weeks for them also they have a limit to how any you can purchase maximum 8
so send them if any one complains we take them off with an apology  ÂÂ

Are there any maps available that would show the Courts in Great Russell Street? My gt.grandfather was born in Court 25 and I would love to know more about it. They then moved to Court 26 where the family lived from around 1843 to 1871. My 2 x gt.parents died in this court.

There is virtually no mention of Courts in the directories for great russell St for some reason, although other streets have many of them listed in the earlier directories. The only indication is one mention of court 47 in 1878, apparently on the west side of the street between nos 231,232 between Bridge st west and Brearley st west. the courts were usually numbered consecutively up one side of the street and then down the other. If 47 was on the west side, I would guess 25,26 would be towards the north end on the eastern side of the street.
The 1889 1:500 scale OS map would show many of the court nos, and any not shown could probably be deduced. They would be available at the central library (unfortunately for your and my own interests i live a way away and can't visit easily).

Thank you Mike. Yes, I think that is my best bet - to visit the Central Library. I am hoping to get up to Birmingham sometime this year if possible, and will make sure I have a look at the map you suggest, so I have saved your information to help me. As I also have connections with Lennox Street and Brearley Street, I will be able to look at those at the same time.

Assuming that the layout hadn't changed since the 1913 OS map, I think that the court must have been one of the two long courts on the east side between bridge st west and new john st. This is going on there being an open (relatively) end of the court, a row of houses on the street running off to the left , but no row on the street directly connected to the buildings on the right hand side.

Actually Judy, on taking a second look i think there is only one possibility. On the map you put on, going up on the right side of the street from New John St , you come to the two long terraces.which seem to have no buildings at the end, presumably just a wall. At first i thoought it could be either, but the shop in the photo is not attached to another buildingto the right of it, there is a gap, and this is only apparently true for the lower of the two terraces on the map. The upper one seems firmly attached to the house of the next terrace (if you get me). This all depends on no changes since 1913 though, and , as there was possibly some bomb damage, there could have been a lot of changes.

As to the pub being listed as The Bank Tavern, perhaps it had changed its name by the time the photo that Lyn posted was taken.

St Matthias Tavern was at 199 Gt Russell St, which seems to be on the corner of Bridge St west (some building numbers missing, but as the picture shows it on a corner it can only be Br.St West)
The Compasses Inn (listed as 196 Brearley St) was on the corner of Gt Russell St and Brearley St
The Justice Inn was at 86 Gt Russell St , on the corner of Frankfort St

Russell Street and also I can find the Justice Inn at 86 Gt Russell St on the corner of Frankfort Street. But I can't see any pub shown on the corner of Gt Russell St/Bridge Street West (only on New John Street West).
I am going to go through the censuses again and try and pinpoint the Courts by the numbers you have given for the pubs. I have Court 25, and then my family moved to Court 26.

I attach sections of kellys in 1940, which shows tavern is at 199, and 1912 ,which shows it is on the corner of Brideg st west, rather than new john st west (as there is another building between it and NJSW

judy..ive found that pic its the one of the compasses pub corner of gt russell and brearley....
its also the same shot as the one you see on the sheet of pics....but with this one as its a seperate pic i can scan it and post on here..that way at least it will enlarge and you can see more of the detail...
