There doesnt look to be anything left of the original buildings from what I can see on googlemaps, more's the pity !!
Im guessing that 129 may perhaps have been between Harry's kebab Hut and the last block of flats on the Row before Mosborough Crescent ? although knowing my navigational skill level, I'm probably way off the mark !!
 
lindy i used to live in the last block of flats before mosborough cres and yes i would think you are about right..there maybe one or two old factories left at the constitution hill end of gt hampton row but apart from that everything has gone..

Thanks for the confirmation Lyn :)..what a coincidence !! I've just checked out the other end of the Row on Google and I see what you mean.. I noticed on Mike's map that there is a pub on the one corner which I think says The Star and Garter, would you happen to know if any photos are on here of that please.

EDIT..just found a photo of the Star and Garter at the beginning of the thread but it would be great if there were others taken from a different angle...might be too much to hope for though ??

Thanks for that Lyn, :) I had looked at the photo but not associated it with todays view. I wonder what my ancestor of 1849 would have made of the high rise flats!!
 
Hi mossg. Just noticed the picture of George Fisher's barber shop. Brings back memories as a child. George was a very good friend of my grandfather. He was always going on about "George Fisher this" ..."George Fisher that". Strange how after all these years the memories and names are as fresh as ever. Regards. willey

moss, thanks so much for posting the photo,..it's a great picture. I am a little confused by the caption attached to the photo though because of the Gt Hampton Row street sign position..am I right in thinking that the row of buildings is actually on New John Street as seen from the corner of Gt Hampton Row, not Gt Hampton from New John ? Either way I would imagine the buildings on the two streets were very similar.

its always been one of my favourite pics..

lindy go to post 103 on the wheeler st thread...cracking pic taken looking up wheeler st...njsw is running accross the pic and the block of flats being built is the one we were talking about the other day..gt hampton row finished at njsw so that block of flats would roughly be where the waste ground is on the pic moss posted on this thread post..829..actually prob a bit more to the right as they widened the road..

It took me ages to work it out Lyn, (the angle of dangle for Wheeler Street..lol ) but I think Ive finally sorted it and matched a today view, my how its all changed !! I'm thinking that the footpath through the grassed area going by St George's Church now, possibly and roughly follows where Wheeler Street once was.

Thanks again for your help Lyn, I am very grateful, it is all helping to build a mental picture of the area my 1849 rellie would have lived in :) You're a star.
EDIT 2..thinking this might be more appropriate on The Wheeler Street thread..please move it if you feel it should
EDIT 3...I forgot to say that Im assuming the smaller building to the right of the tower block in both pictures is the flats we talked about, just before Mosborough Crescent ??

perfect lindy...spot on i would say..happy to help as ive got most of my lot on many streets and roads round there..i post this map from time to time..dont know if you have got it but it really helps me to get my bearings...if this does not enlarge i will send it via photo bucket..

The Map is great !! ..many thanks again, I can enlarge it by zooming in. It really does help to get your bearings and I also spotted another road where Ive found an ancestor..Leonard Road..I will have a search for that later.
 
think i am tired tonight lindy...cant recall the location of the pic off hand but im sure i posted it under the old st pics thread not so long back..i wouldnt be without that map even though i have referred to it many times over the past few years i am still learning where streets ect were...

I know the feeling Lyn..Not to worry about the photo, I expect it will come to you. I can only make out West Heath and Bromsgrove on the sign post.

It is the roundabout at the junction of masshouse lane and Redditch Road, near kings norton green. The version I have says it was 1950

Lindy, having looked at old and new maps of Brearley St in relation to Gt Hampton Row.I feel sure your relatives lived on the same spot as these 60s built shops,that are still there today.moss

hi moss those shops are opposite where st georges place was give or take a yard or two but i dont think you are far out..i reckon lindys shop is just by the mainsonettes to the right of your pic..
you can see the maisonettes better on post 4...
