The maps are showing Greaves Place, which Brumgum thought was called Greaves passage

hiya - sorry my post wasn't very clear :o

what map were those images from? they cover the part of birmingham I'm really interested in and would be interested in looking to get one :)

thanks

Ernie

Well its priced at 4/- so it must be prior to 1971. I don't think they had completed Duddeston Manor Rd by then. If you look at this late 1960's street plan from a later A to Z it shows that Duddeston Manor Rd did adopt the line of Willis St down to Vauxhall Rd, and the piece of Francis St where my house stood remains untouched.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. The smaller scale map is from alan godfrey (https://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/acatalog/index1.html ), who are very reasonable. This map is Birmingham north 1913 (14.01 Wa). The bit shown id at the bottom of the map. If you are likely to want more than one there is a fixed 0.75p postal charge how ever many you order.
The larger scale map is from the 1:500 scale 1890 OS series. It is available in the library and you can copy them as there are no copyright issues now the OS don't supply them. They used to be available from ordnance survey, but not any more. You can get them from a firm called Groundsure, but they are expensive. Don't know exactly where you're interested in but this one covers This one covers from gosta green triangle to not quite the far end of Price st across, and from junction moland st and aston st to just above digby st. If that covers an area of interest to you, thden if you IM me your e-mail address I'll send it to you

Re: Francis Street

Pedlarman. ( Jim ) I hope this map helps with Francis Street Location.

Great Frances Street can just be seen at the end of Ashted Row.

Thanks, Ernie,

Pictures are creeping back and I now have my bearings.

The trouble is: it is years since I took a walk around the old end and only went back when my mom was still living there.

There are names on the newer maps of Ashted, and Nechells, that are completely strange to me. I used to hear my mom mention such names as Kellets Road (or Grove, was it?) where she used to go shopping. Such names don't mean a thing to me...! They certainly weren't there when I lived in the area.

Anyway, my motives are that I am busy chasing up my family history and I received a copy of a birth certificate from the register office that indicated that a relative I was searching for lived in Francis Street in 1901.

It was the same name, but I suspect that it was not the person I was looking for - his family had similar sounding names ( such as Eliza when I was seeking Elizabeth) but there were other circumstances that didn't feel, or sound, right...

But I'll struggle on. I just wish I didn't have to depend so much on the computer. As you know, I am tethered up to an oxygen hose and - at the moment - haven't the strength to hoist a mobile canister.

But I do my session of PT every morning and am slowly getting my muscles back. Well, those that the Good Lord allows an 80-year-old to retain...!!!

Anyway, thanks for looking up Francis Street for me. Good on Yer, Cobber...

Cheers,

Jim

PMC1947. Phil it looks as though on your map the only bit that survived of Francis Street was between Henry Street and Willis Street, I also noticed on your map Little Francis GNDS was that street. I had heard this spoken in the past and suspect it was from Lupin Street to Great Lister Street.

Pedlarman. Jim. I went back some years ago and found Coleman Street was partly there but renamed Kellet Road and part way along turned to link up with Great Lister Street and followed the coarse about were 13 court used to be, my gran's old house and the yard.

Ernie

I have been trying to trace this St Thomas's Social Club that was supposed to be in Great Lister St, but I can find no trace of it. The only place I was able to find of that name was located in Washington St, which was off Holloway Head. Its a bit of a jaunt from there to Great Lister St.

Perhaps someone who came from the Lee Bank area would be able to enlighten me.

Phil

Phil
Tthe St thomas social club seems to possibly be next to Ridley st, and this corner is very sharp, which would fit in with the photo
mike

Mike,

Yes, the St Thomas's I found was on the corner of Washington St and Ridley St. I suppose it was connected with St Thomas's Church in Bath Row that was bombed out during the war.

I thought it strange that a Church Social Club called after St Thomas would be in Nechells on Great Lister St. It was more likely to be called St Matthews Social Club in that locality.

Yes the only bit of the original Francis St to survive is the bit that I lived on. Little Francis St ran from the other side of the Francis St Junction with Lupin St to Great Lister St opposite Schofield St.

I was down that way a couple of years back and took photo's of where I used to live. In Francis St its now a back entrance to the new St Matthews School, and my house in Inkerman St is now covered by the museum storage facility. They have stored an old chip fryer where my house stood, pity is wasn't there when I lived there.

I agree, its get harder to look at a place and think "I used to live there" Some places have changed beyond all recognition and others haven't changed at all.

Phil

Phil. It may sound daft to say it but the way things have now changed it gives a sad feeling of not belonging any more.

Ernie,

I know exactly what you are saying. For instance, I loved my old school, Loxton Street, and one teacher in particular - George Grove, known by us kids as "Groggie". After I left I always intended to pay the school, and Mr. Grove, a return visit...

I never did. And I have regretted it ever since. Now, it's all gone - Groggie, the school, the lot...!

Jim

Hey guys, come on a least we have memories and with sites like this we can reminisce.

Thats what the site is for is it not? "Putting in your threepenny's worth" and putting your point of view and especially memories forwards.

Nice photo of Melvina Rd, you don't see that many of them about.

Hi and thanks Phil.have,nt spoken to ger22van in a while he is a very as yourself a very knowledgeable person of the place we all know and love and long may you reign.
We have to stick together, and as many more, and more to come on here bring our memories out of hiding in the back of our mind,it has certainly been a great eye opener and i don,t mind admitting has bought more than one tear to my eyes as things that i had forgotten but were so dear to me,silly old fool ain,t i.
But life's a bitch and then you die..
cheers Phil. best wishes Derek.. PS here,s another shot i know it does,nt belong but i love it.

Derek. That's a great picture !!!! My Uncle George used to catch the bus from the Met to come for his dinner at Gran's so I used to see him every dinner time. Seeing the picture made me think of him catching the bus there.
Nice One Derek, Take Care mate.

Derek

What do you mean "doesn't belong". If it doesn't belong here it doesn't belong anywhere. Its a wonderful painting depicting a 56 BCT bus on Saltley High St just about to cross Saltley Bridge.

Phil

I've just posted a photo of the Train Tavern Great Francis St opposite Duddeston Mill Rd on another thread on the forum.

The thing is what did I see lurking in the background between the pub and the tower block.

Its the recreation ground outside the Tom Thumb pub, where I spent some of my (some say misspent) youth. Then in later years I used the pub itself.

Its a pity I can't blow it up larger or make it better quality, as I have been after a decent photo of this pub for ages.

happy days i know you remember them best wishes Derek

Great thread, so many pictures, it was so lovely to share your memories.
I remeber St matthews church, and Cannon Thomas - i think it is no longer in use, which is so sad.

I will have a look and see if i have any pictures to share too, sadly i have not many anymore.

I lived in melvina road (was born there) with my Mom Joan (anyone remember her?) sisters Rachel and Lorriane.

Gill. As a 13 year old, I used to delivery papers to loads of addresses in Melvina Rd. Used to live in Queens Tower in those days. Barry.
