Golden Hillock Road School

Hello folks. Does anyone remember a teacher called Barry Bowker from the 1970's and 80's. He was head of lower school and had a back injury caused by someone pulling a chair out from under him when he was sitting down as a young man.
I remember Mr. Bowker ( with a slight bend in his back ) as deputy head under Mr. Parsons who I believe originated from S. Africa. I remember Mr Parsons being extremely strict and a tough disciplinarian who did not suffer fools or any nonsense! The school under , Mr. Parsons, was well run and a very successful school.

I studied at Golden Hillock Comprehensive from Jan 1970 to July 1975.

Yes I remember Barry Bowker as Deputy Head under Mr Parsons but at the same time do you remember the following - Mr Travers, Mr Timmins, Mr Flowers, Mr Brisco, Mr Heardman, Mr Dennis Watts ? That was the days !!!!!!

Yes I do! Mr Brisco ( Woodwork) , Mr. Watts ( Metalwork).

Also remember Mr Littlefoot ( PE) , Mr. Langley ( my English teacher in class 3Q where I used to sit next to Terry "Astro" Wilson from UB40 :) and Michael Virtue ( UB40 Keyboardist) was in the next door class :)

Mr. Heardman rings a bell - was he a PE teacher?

I remember Mr Matthews who used to take Cricket classes - I think he also smoked heavily?

I also remember Mr. Jones our Math's teacher who did not suffer fools gladly!

Do you remember Mr Scott the previous PE Teacher ?
I remember Mr Scott. He was Third year Form teacher as well as a PE teacher in about 1966. Could not pronounce my name correctly but at least he tried. Always found him fair and seemed to command respect from all.

He had been my class teacher the year before During the 'Double' year I was in Miss Pargetter's class. In the final Year 54/55 I was in Miss Ashmore's class and we won South Birmingham Cricket Cup,

Nope bit before my, ahem, youthful time.Anyone recall Mr Tompkison art Teacher as he was longest serving?
The BBC did a docu in mid 80s on the school(it was only shown the one time).Sadly can't find any records/listings for the documentary.
Yes he was my art teacher, a fantastic teacher. Probably one of my favourites at the school.

Hello! Sorry to reawaken an old thread, but just curious if anyone remembers my father, or other members of my family who all went to Golden Hillock Primary. My father is Paul Llewellyn - brothers David and Peter, sisters Bronwen, Marian, Rhona and June. My father was born in 1942. His family were from south Wales. I know his mum (my nan), Eva, lived in a place called Oreal Villas before moving to a council flat in Highgate, but I don’t know if that was the house he grew up in or where it is (was?) in Birmingham.

My father moved to Coventry in his late 20s, which is where I was born and grew up. My dad moved out to Germany for work when I was 21, he’s still there. He was a builder by trade. He told me a few stories about Golden Hillock Primary, including how they taught the children how to write in ‘copperplate’ handwriting. I had asked why his handwriting was the same as my auntie Bronwen’s, I hadn’t expected that they would teach such beautiful and neat handwriting in school.

My father said he and his brothers played a lot of rugby in school. My uncle David was a local tearaway as a little kid (in school as well as out) and apparently used to race the buses on his kids’ bike, and ‘get lost’ until he found a policeman, who would take him to the local police station and give him cake and tea until my Nan arrived to take him home (and tan his hide for being a pain!). My uncle Peter was quite the teddy boy and apparently got into trouble for smoking illicit substances. He was quite a little git in school too, by all accounts, and I don’t think he did very well. My father wasn’t a good pupil either, but of course you could easily still find a job back then in the trades.

I remember seeing a class photo at Golden Hillock Primary that included my aunty June, but I don’t know what year that was - my guess would be the late 1940s, perhaps the very early 50’s. The bobbed hair for girls was the fashion back then, perhaps left over from wartime, and that’s what I remember most from the photo.

I’m just curious if anyone remembers my father’s family.
