Ghost signs of Birmingham

Couple of good signs there Froth. The Kardomah seems to be nicely hanging in there. Wonder what the full title was for the Dogs Home? Can't think what the 'STAY...' would have been. Thanks for posting. Viv.

Of course Froth, that makes sense. Here's a sad looking sign. Lost a few of it's letters. It's Quality Works in Great Hampton Street. Never heard of them. Viv.

Thanks Alan. You're a mine of info! That £40,000 must have been a godsend to the home. Viv.

Thanks Mike and Lyn. Silly me thinking it was the co. name! But how confident they were to declare to all that it was a 'quality works'. Viv.

Here we have Goode's Quality Works in 1914 (courtesy Jewellery Quarter Heritage magazine 2 Oct 2012). Viv.

The sign written on the side of Goode's Quality Works building in the 1914 photo would have been here. Surprised there's no longer any trace of it. Viv.

viv i was thinking...its a good job the name of the factory building did not reflect what they made or sold...as a child walking to alma st school you can imagine what i thought they made at the crocodile works lol..

No dawdling past that building then Lyn!

Here's a favourite, the Red Lion on Soho Rd. Planning consultation has recently closed on this one. Nice sign on the side wall. Be interesting to see if it survives any future development. Viv.

viv i think its a james and lister lea building...be interesting to see if the plans to turn it into a restaurant go ahead...

Thanks for the info Lyn on the Red Lion. Such a wonderful building, especially the interior. But if the plans go ahead I think the painted sign on the side wall will disappear. This looks like the plan for the building alongside the pub.

The proposals are on DPD's site here. Both the Red Lion Pub and the adjoining space (once Red Lion Motors) proposals are shown, just go to the home page if anyone interested. Viv.

Can just about make this sign out above the door. Another pub, The Union, corner of Gerrard Street and Berners Street. Looks like it's no longer a pub. Viv.

Nice memories Alan. Be interesting to see what they do with the interior of the Red Lion. Hopefully all the tiling is protected along with the building. Be a pity to lose it like they did with the Woodman tiles on Easy Row.

Hi Maypolebaz. Was never very confident in pronouncing Bile Beans. Some pronounced it'Byle' Beans whilst others, including my mum, said 'Billie' Beans!

Thought I'd have a look along Colmore Row and there're are a few signs along there like this one. Maybe Co-operative?

I do so hope these two don't disappear too quickly; Midland Bank and the National Provincial Bank of England on Bennetts Hill. They seem to be standing up to the elements at the moment. Or maybe they're carefully maintained? So important to Brum's banking history. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1350574844.829666.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1350574884.131028.jpg

The Gosta Green pub. Holt breweries sign still visible on the side wall. Has this always been the Gosta Green or was it once the Pot 'o Beer? Viv.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1351201149.048451.jpg

Thanks Rob. Went in there often in the late 70s and I remember it being a large pub. Looking again on Streetview I wonder if it also once had a brewery (looking at the picture on the Gosta Green sign looks like brewing equipment. Also there're several buildings attached to the pub). And of course it's on Holt Street - the name of the brewers. I remember in the 70s it had a lot of old equipment hanging from the walls and the ceiling and now wonder if these were items connected with brewing. The pub always had a great atmosphere. Viv.

I wonder if anyone can throw some light on this one. In Wylde Green village there is a building that looks to have been an electricity sub station in the past, although i have been told that it was toilets at some point.
There is a ghost sign above it but it is not at all clear as you can see from this Google earth picture. It does look a little more readable if you are close to it.Or in my case sitting in the wine bar across the road.
My best guess is ERDINGTON TRAMWAYS.Does anyone know this building?moss

Moss
It is shown on the c 1913 map as a waiting room. As can be seen it was at the end of the road for the tramway

Good find Moss. I had a go at zooming in and out on Streetview but would never have been able to work that one out. Thanks Mike too. There's a small section on Streetview that gives you an (older?) view of the whole building too. Would have been a much cosier waiting room than that bus shelter! Viv.
