Destruction of Gosta's old Green

The university of Aston are about to build over the Green in front of the Sacks of Potatoes .As you'll be aware this site has historical importance for Birmingham. It was a ' Speakers Corner' for centuries where Wesley preached and Reform Act radicals, Chartists, early socialists all were heard. It was also where the local market was held- there's a wonderful photo of the market inside the pub. It is also a beautiful treed area in the local built up area.
How can the University be dissuaded from this destruction or at least made to feel some embarrassment- any suggestions??

hello old baggie and welcome to the forum...i totally understand your feelings as will most of our members but alas over the years i have come to realise that if an historical building or indeed a piece of prime land is needed then there is not much that can be done to stop it...i have tried a couple of times to help save old buildings but sadly it just fell on deaf ears...i have never been in the sack of potatoes but as soon as i can i will go and take a look at the photograph you mentioned

I would imagine that this development will need planning permission, therefore you have an opportunity to voice your concerns there via the planning process. You of course need to be clear as to why you object and state the heritage value and historic significance of the site and also the resolution you are seeking.

Even if you cannot prevent the development, you maybe able to have something included into the design some form of recognition of the site past.

If you need supporting info, these threads may be of use. Viv.
