City Centre Photographs

Looking at #2065, its something that has always amazed me, that the thing about HE damage, is so variable, the "Rackhams", building on the corner looks nearly undamaged, it the blast direction, not size amount, same in NI.

I would say looking at the church spire that it is definitely St Pauls. Studying the maps I would say that the photo was taken near the junction of Newhall Street and Great Charles Street. I think that the camera has, because of foreshortening, shown the hill steeper than it actually is.

I've moved the posts about memories of the dentist to the thread below following Lyn's (Astoness's) suggestion to post on that dedicated thread.Thank you all for posting your memories.

Hi, I was really excited to see this photograph [ Queens college chambers Paradise street]whilst doing an internet search. Do you have the file that you can email me? Your photobucket isn't available
I am researching my companies history and we had an office here around the time of the photograph!
best regards
Jay

Jay, good luck with your research and welcome to The Forum, enjoy!

Hi Lyn, I loved those two pictures and have been wondering about the Guggenheim sign below the large windows on the top right. I seem to remember it was queried on another thread but my memory has let me down.

Just noticed the strange tower on the same side too.

I just reread Bobs post and can subscribe to most of what is written. What I dislike is that the exterior for most cases on newer buildings is not structural and can be made to look cosmetically pleasing. For the most part, £££’s are the driving factor and not design or asthetics. Age will not treat them well as we are already seeing.

Guggenheim was a photographic studio. It occupied the top floor of the corner of New Street / Pinfold Street around the turn of the 19th to 20th century. No relation to the wealthy American family.
