That's a terrible shock and very sad news. I loved reading Chris's posts, especially all the lovely memories of him growing up in Streetly with his wonderful, loving family. I often said he should write a book, he had such a talent for writing, it was a joy to read.
RIP Chris, reunited with your loved ones.

absolutely agree with you lynn...for anyone wishing to read about the memories chris wrote about here is a link

Such sad news. Chris wrote so well about Streetly and the Chester Road, on which he and his family had lived. I found his memories to be a fascinating read, as someone who has also spent many years living in that area. My thoughts are with his family and friends, including those on this site - RIP Chris.

Interesting article, thanks, Dennis.

Another fragment of Umberslade's history although more about the grounds in general than the obelisk. During WW2 Umberslade was the home of a Home Guard Weaponry School. Here are a few images taken by some Erdington blokes who were on a course there. (More online, if anyone is interested in looking further). It's spring or summer, 1943.

The Hall at the time - a group of officers being taught how to target - an artillery gun set up to fire - and some of the men, finished for the day and mucking about with the help of a bit of the park's statuary.

A favorite ChrisM posting

It is a comfort to read these wonderful tributes; thank you so very much for posting them. Chris was my only real uncle and also my Godfather, a role he took on just over 70 years ago. As others will know, he remained active on this Forum until the very last evening of his life, as well as being most fit and healthy generally. Just three days beforehand, he had driven himself over to Ombersley for lunch with his four nephews, the third such occasion when we had played catch-up in 2025 alone and we all parted having "saved the date" for another reunion in the New Year. To say that his was a huge influence upon my upbringing would be an understatement: he had the rare knack of being able to tune into my then wavelength at every stage of my development and, after every encounter, I would discover new information, ideas and understanding about whatever we had discussed. Having been able to adapt his particular knowledge and skills into the digital age, when this itself was only beginning to emerge, meant that so much could be written down, illustrated and made available not only for us now but for future generations also to enjoy. Thank you, Chris, so much...
