it is with great sadness i have to let you all know that our friend chris sadly passed away peacefully in his sleep at the end of october aged 89...chris had been a member of this forum since 2007 and a moderator for many years...he attended so many of our forum meets ups and was so supportive of the forum and its members...he is going to be missed so much..

my sincere condolences to marlene his son chas and to all of his family and friends..

That's a terrible shock and very sad news. I loved reading Chris's posts, especially all the lovely memories of him growing up in Streetly with his wonderful, loving family. I often said he should write a book, he had such a talent for writing, it was a joy to read.
RIP Chris, reunited with your loved ones.

As I said in post 4 - candles were lit this morning in our Lady chapel for Chris and the family.
I realise some of you may not believe but hope it is of comfort to those who do and that I haven't offended anyone by posting.

Such sad news. Chris wrote so well about Streetly and the Chester Road, on which he and his family had lived. I found his memories to be a fascinating read, as someone who has also spent many years living in that area. My thoughts are with his family and friends, including those on this site - RIP Chris.

Another fragment of Umberslade's history although more about the grounds in general than the obelisk. During WW2 Umberslade was the home of a Home Guard Weaponry School. Here are a few images taken by some Erdington blokes who were on a course there. (More online, if anyone is interested in looking further). It's spring or summer, 1943.

The Hall at the time - a group of officers being taught how to target - an artillery gun set up to fire - and some of the men, finished for the day and mucking about with the help of a bit of the park's statuary.
