Car registration numbers

My first car was a Dellow with the number plate (I think) AW 1700, unfortunately the only pics I have are taken sideways on:( and then I bought an Austin Healy Sprite 242 BOV.

First car was a 1954 Morris Minor ( split screen ) 840 cc saloon. Reg no. MVJ 640. If you have it give us a shout.
The only other number I can remember belonged to my mrs, now her sons plate, was BEE 578.
I see lots of plates which have been "fiddled with". How come the plate recognition system never pick them up? If you asked me my present car number I have not got a clue. Nothing memorable about it.

Love the frog eye David,my brother had one he had the engine out of my a35 van for it when i scraped it . happy days. regards Derek.

I bought a Mk 2 escort about 20 odd years ago with the numbr plate redg D40 MOM i have a screw under the 4 so it looks like DAD MOM I have got it as a cherised plate and now it is on my wifes car which is a Ka luxury with leather trim

ROD 90 WAS NOT a Birmingham number......that was a Devon number

Hi Mike,

A lot of people think that if it 'had an O in the middle' it will be a Birmingham number, but there were quite a few that weren't. From
recollection these were OD, OI, OO, OQ (not used), OR, OS, OT, OU,
OW, OY and OZ. I hope I haven't missed any!!

Kind regards Dave

Dave, I am lead to believe Birmigham did not fall in line and use the 64 "B" suffix, Im pretty certain my 1100 was registered in early Jan 1964, I belive quite a few Birmigham Daimler Fleetline buses delivered in 1964 also carried "reverse" numbers , ok it could be argued that those blocks had been reserved by BCT but there would be no logical reason as they could still have had matched fleet and registration numbers even with the "B" suffix in use.

Smethwick. still used **** HA is 64, I believe

Cheers Bill

I have since found this, hopefully pasted here

https://homepage.ntlworld.com/johnstonrh/a30a35/regnos/index.htm

if you open the REGYEARS.ZIP it appears to give the exact month that the registration marks were issued.......... If I am reading this correctly I am wrong about my 748 LOE being a 1964 issue but right In thinking that Birmigham did issue "reversed" non suffixed registrations up until August 1964.......or am I??

Hi Bill,

Its funny how your mind can play tricks on you. I remembered
seeing a Morris Minor 1000 with the reg AOA---A, but it must
have been AOA---B!! My apologies for misleading you on that
one, - coincidentally I was just about to email the same
link to you. It took me a long time to find, and having read it I
have saved the file for future use. What an excellent dating source. Birmingham appears to have adopted the suffix letter B in August
1964 as you say. I couldn't find anything for Smethwick however,
so perhaps it doesnt cover everything, but it certainly does an
excellent job for Birmingham.

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Bill

A quick update, I gave now found Smethwick, - it is listed as
Warley, and it appears that they also adopted the B suffix in
August 1964

Kind regards Dave

Hi Dave, do you know which month Smethwick started with the "B" in 64?

I thought some of the Midland Red D9s srom 64 has XXXX HA marks. Regarding the link re Birmingham regs......looks like a clear case of "Great Minds" ect.

Cheers Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes, it was August 1964, the same as Birmingham. But I am puzzled
by the 'reverse' registrations you mention. Smethwick 'ran out' of the old style ABC123 type registrations in 1955, largely due I expect to having
only one registration, and having a lot of them guzzled by Midland Red!!
You would then expect that the reverse registrations would be 1-9999HA
followed by 1-999AHA etc, but although 601-650AHA was used on
S15 saloons in 1957 (presumably prebooked in 1955), as you say, the XXXX HA sequence was not used until the 1960s for both saloon and double decker buses. Although Smethwick only reached 'reverse' SHA registrations before going over to suffix letters in 1964, I wonder if they feared running out before the new system was introduced, and issued the XXXX HA numbers especially for Midland Red.

I have a vivid memory of an old Midland Red saloon I used to see around town and parked up at Benacre Street in the 1950's/early 60's reg
HA9454. Your mention of HA +4 numbers reminded me of it.

I wonder if you remember this one

Kind regards

Dave

I haven't got one of that, but here's similar HA 9456

AB1 was always the number on the Chief Constables car in Worcestershire and I think it transferred to West Mercia. The MP Gerald Nabbaro held the NAB 1 and a few subsequent numbers. My first numbers were 25 BDP, 405 GML , 1243 JW 928 GTX all probably quite saleable now

Id like to know David was that a uni ? scarf arf arf:P:rolleyes:and when I first saw the picture with the shadow I had to look again thought your front wheels were hanging over the edge of a cliff ?:D ...AW.. fully nice car and fun days;)

Back in the late 70s /early 80s outside Sparkhill police station used to be a Datsun Sunny with one of the best numbers i have seen - COP999 - the original owner still has it and a few years a go was selling it for 20k
There is also a Range Rover in Moseley with number JOE1- he has also had number for a very long along time and it is worth @125K - he paid 44K for it in 1990

Is LOM 1 still around Birmingham. It used to me on the Lord Mayors official car.

One of the more memorable plates I saw in the 70s was GO K1D on an MGB GT.
