john not sure if you remember my friend as i think hes a bit younger than you but his name is maxwell bullivant...you may recall his parents better.. they lived at no 20 from about 1948 to 1965

I saw a photo of our house, which was built over the Villa St post office run by Mr and Mrs Reeves, and next door to Singl etons where they made packing crates. I can't find the photo but if anyone has this picture, I really would appreciate it being posted again.The name plate is also visible.

Lyn,Great! I have viewed all the photos of Nursery rd you kindly entered,thanks...remember every one as they appear on camera.As I mentioned there is Bandages shop on the corner of church st,han another friend lived there,Kenny Jenks,just up 50yds on the left from the shop.Note Wellesley st also.Salvation Army hall was opposite the demolised factory and sweet shop.Lambournes factory round the corner from both villa & brougham st on nursery rd,the young lady I went out with lived above the P.O.john not sure if you remember my friend as i think hes a bit younger than you but his name is maxwell bullivant...you may recall his parents better.. they lived at no 20 from about 1948 to 1965

Regarding Maxwell Bullivant..yes I did know him,lived down the entry/terrace behind the little wool shop that was,next to the annex.But as you say he was younger than me.Your dates are perfectly correct Lyn...Can remember all around the area,people from Wills st,george st,john st,hunters rd,barker st etc.VILLA ROAD.worked @ Gowers newsagents from 52/56 Reg gower was the owner then helped by his sister gwnne and his mother,nice people.6 days a week morning before school...sometimes doing a extra round if someone did not turn up.Also evenings of course.My round was heathfield rd,radford,North & west drives.worlds end a few in by Handsworth park.My old stomping ground in those days.Happy days Lyn.

glad you liked the photos john...bet they bought back memories...how strange that you worked at gowers paper shop because so did maxwell and so did my brother but that would have been after you worked there..max has an elder brother lawson who maybe nearer your age...there should be a photo on the forum of gowers with i think the owners standing outside the shop...if you cant locate it let me know..oh if you dont mind me asking john what is your surname....all the best

lyn,will have look for the gowers photos,opposite the villa cross cinema,had a lot of fun there...as a youngster on a saturday morning when the din was so bad you could not hear a thing! Then later going on dates.Surname is Davey lyn.

thanks for the surname john i will ask my friend if he recalls it...just in case you cant locate it on the forum here is gowers shop dated 1934 sure i have one taken in the 50s as well but will have to look for it...you most likely know that the shop is still standing but no longer gowers

Thats Mr Gower senior in the photo,he had just retired when I started there,as stated previously they were nice people to work for lyn.Shops along the villa rd,foster bros,evans & evans,jollys,baines,wasalls,paynes,milk bar,

hi john me again...just been talking to maxwell from no 20 and yes he remembers the davey family...he said he thinks they used to grow marigolds in the front garden....also you must have lived next to the oneil family who lived at either no 4 or 6..roy oneil had a scrap yard in church st which backed onto my garden in villa st...the scrap merchant/wrestler/actor pat roach got married from roy oniels house i think that was in 1957 ...its a small world

Hi Lyn,Yes you are quite right,the O'neils lived @ no4.Maxwells memory is on the ball..Mom did have marigolds everywhere!Mr & Mrs Edwards lived @ no6 in those days,They had a business from the house power cleaning paint drums I believe! had a son & daughter,dennis & Barbara.both were older than me.We got on well and actually purchased a property from them in Bewdley.As you say a small world Lyn.

brilliant john..max has mentioned the oil drums to me and as far as he remembers they were renovated and painted green...at no 16 there used to be a pub called the bath tavern..we think it had gone by the 30s and the licence was transferred to the college arms college road...both myself and max have been searching for 10 years now to find a photo of the bath tavern but no luck so far...

According to https://www.kzwp.com/lyons1/group3.htm Bev was originally named Lyons coffee and chicory extract (introduced in 1921), though, as the change happened in 1930, I doubt if many members remember the original name. From this it seemed to be a combination of coffee and chicory (I dont think Camp had any coffee in it). Never having had the misfortune to try it (unlike Camp) I cannot say if it was any better tasting

Morgan&Marlow the rear of No. 5&7 Brougham Street.
I took the company over in 1965 it had been in Brougham Street 1918, it was definitely there in 1929 as I have the company insurance policy, the company did non ferrous stamping and presswork. At the front house No7 was a family called Peplows, next door to them was the ham factory later on a plating company opposite where RoyO'Neill lived was a saw sharpening company and next door was the old school building with a company that sharpened milling cutters. We stayed at premies until the end of 1975 and moved to the jewellery quarter, 1-5 Spencer Street - happy days!

hi roger and welcome...not sure if you have read all of this thread but somewhere on it i have posted a photo showing no 5 and 7 brougham st...would you have happen to have any old photos of the street that you could share with us please...i lived in villa st from 58 to 72
