Am I correct in presuming that Balding's was the kind of small shop where the owners lived above. The owner was quite entrepreneurial to have his own postcards printed, especially with a humorous advert to boot. One wonders how common this kind of small shop advertisement was in those for off days.
There were, I suspect, countless small provisions shop keepers who had a great reputation for their hams right throughout the UK (and abroad of course). I wonder when the shop changed hands and were the new owners so popular with their :cooked meat products as Mr. Balding seemed to suggest? Presumably he only sold to his local customers and did not sell to other shopkeepers. I wonder what else he sold? There still are a few shops around, mainly in rural places where supermarkets pose no threat, that still manage to provide you with a quarter of ham (forgot it is now grammes) a pair of wellington boots and a shovel for the coal.
Little did Mr. Balding realize that he would still be the talk of the town in 2017!
