Re: Was there a cinema near Ethel St/New Street

Help !!! My husband thinks there was a cinema near to Ethel Street/New
Street....is he right ??? Lived too long away from B'ham I'm afraid, so my
memory is VERY hazy on this matter !!!
Margaret.
Don't know if anyone has replied but it was the ABC I used to go there to see press screenings, and met Bert Kwok on one occasion he's a really nice bloke. The Chinese community used to take it over on a Saturday night for Chinese films. It also had the seats in the Gods they were in the roof and when you looked down it was like you were going to fall.

No Paul, the Futurist was in John Bright Street, I remember going past the place five times a day when I drove the Bristol Road buses 6I, 62 and 63. It was on the immediate left as we departed Navigation Street. (I think???) Some one will know and tell us.

Remember the Hot Dog barrow on the corner of Navigation Street and Hill Street ?

I remember going to the "Cartoon Picture house" in Station St in the '60s. What I found amazing was that they showed films from the 1930s and 1940s such as 'The Three Stooges', 'Flash Gordon', and 'Batman'. I have to admit that I thought they were great.

The Jacy as it was in the 60's did run a loop of good news reels, cartoons and the likes of old Batman and Flash Gordon serials. I hated the Three Stooges.

I have to plead guilty to visiting the Atlas and The Castle out of these five.

Hi Carolina: Do you happen to have a photo of the buildings opposite the Newtown Palace. A friend of mine's grandmother had a sweet shop there and I
would love to find a photo for her. Thanks

Ha ha Keegs! Very funny:biggrin: Though I wouldn't have minded if he'd bought me one - think my date might have though!

Wow,never thought i would see that again, walked by it umpteen times when i lived in Great Russel Street, and saw a film there once, probably the winter of 1961,or 1962,as i do remember wearing my balaclava to keep the cold out, though sadly i cannot recall the film, thank you for a wonderful reminder of days long gone.

Hi jennyann,i wonder if the shop you are looking for is on any of these pictures? They were all within 50 yards of the Newtown.moss

I went to the Essoldo Quinton a couple of times, funny to see an old "Woodgate" phone number printed when it was miles away from there.

Very surprised to see pictures of the Beacon at Scott Arms. I only have memories of the derelict building for a few years, then it being a rubble site. I would have bet money on it being a more gothic looking affair, not the 30's futuristic style. I definitely dont remember the side entrance part, perhaps that was demolished earlier or was out of view when boarded up.

I find it hard to imagine having a cinema a couple of minutes walk from where I live. For interest, as a kid I frequented the less visually impressive Kings Cinema in West Brom...

Its quite amazing the sheer density of cinemas particularly in in town and city centres when you add them up. Maybe in a few decades we will be saying the same thing about phone shops...

Hi

The Beacon Great Barr fabulous place. 1962 to 1965. must have seen every film.
Superb Fish and Chip Shop the Scott Arms what else did you want.

There are a couple of pics elsewhere on the forum in which the Beacon Cinema can be seen. They show it in it's early days...click on pics to see them...
The first pic is - dated 1936 and they probably found the house in front of it rather inconvenient...
The second pic is - probably a later date but still gas lamps on the Queslett Rd...

Hi All,

Does anyone remember getting in to see an ;A; film without being accompanied by an adult? I was 14 and my pal was boasting that he could get into The Elite on Bordesley Green. I tried it and got in to see 'Beau Geste' with no trouble at all.

Another picture of the Beacon Cinema - the upstairs shops were probably not a good idea - they could only be accessed up concrete stairways - and top of the tower looks like a helicopter landing pad.

With regard to the fish and chip shop on the balcony many people speak fondly of, its worth noting that the family that ran it moved across the road to open the Scott Arms fish bar when the cinema closed down (or shortly before), and continue to run it to this day.

In addition, Im really fascinated by that freestanding building in front of the Beacon cinema. What's more, I've seen another photo that shows that there was a matching building on the adjacent corner, in front of what is now the empty Somerfield building.

wobag i think the chippy was and as you say still is called marcos..been there for at least 40 years to my knoweledge..

A couple of pics of Scott Arms corners opposite the Beacon Cinema

An early photo of the corner opposite the Beacon Cinema -
gas lamps - and that tree looks like it could be the one in
the pic linked from post #1221

A look at the another Scott Arms corner shows the pub in the early 1950's.

Lyn, Marcos is the one that was (and is) by the Clifton. The name of the one in the Beacon remains unclear though it might have been "Christopher's". The shop they run now is definitely called The Scott Arms Fish Barr, pass it on the way home every day :)

oh silly me i was getting mixed up with the cinemas....was the beacon the one by the scott arms lights..if so i went there once or twice in the 70s...

Thats the one.

Actually Im really looking for a photo Ive seen online in the last few days but I cant find it anywhere now. There are a couple of photos of The Beacon which are all over the place, but there is a similar one where the entrance sign clearly says "GRAND OPENING TUESDAY NEXT".

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
