Birchfield Road Perry Barr

oh thats great info mike...goes a long way i think to explaining what was happing in that photo..

Yes thanks for the info Mike. It doesn't look like a casual photo, the shop owner/attendents are posing outside, well at least they're very aware of the camera. I think the photo looks like it must have been taken in relation to something very topical. Viv.

Think I'd have been tempted to have a look at this place if it was still there at 96 Birchfield Road. All those health benefits to riding a moped! Mr Powell's 'Joybike' looks fun! And note "Ten minutes peddling a day, keeps the undertaker away". This site might be of interest to moped enthusiasts too.

Hi im new to this site- joined to research my old employer- rf sweeney radio.. It has been mentioned here.. The perry barr branch was at 274 wellington rd..opposite crown and cushion.. Not sure what it is now.. Maybe a small supermarket ? The manager there was also an 'andy' .. Hee made me a video pirate of 'bluethunder
' i recall ! Lol circa 1984 xx

Never seen so many 100e Fords in one photo, or is one a consul, even though I bought one in 1964. Anyone remember the Market hall in Perry Barr, my Mother used to buy the little plastic bottles of beer shampoo whenever we visited.

Great photo Topsy. When I was little I used to get my feet measured for shoes at that Englands shoe shop. There's a newspaper stand in the foreground, forgotton about those. I think the vendor used to stand inside the box. Viv.

Blimey, that's brought back some memories! I also had my feet measured at England's Shoe Shop, and the assistant was rather puzzled when she measured by left foot a size larger than my right. But that's how it was, and still is! If I recall correctly, that assistant was called Sylvia, and she was married to Peter Leicester who was connected with All Souls Church.

I think the car on the extreme left is a Consul, and the car right behind it on the Birchfield Road is an Austin A55. You can also just see Roy's Bakery on Aston Lane.

Big Gee. Peter Leicester married the late Yvonne Le Roux. I think your "Sylvia" may have been Sylvia Southall who attended All Souls Church. What do you think? Regards. willey

Willey, you're absolutely correct. I think there was still a drop of Christmas spirit floating around when I wrote that. Cannot believe how long ago it all was....depressing.

topsey, what a great picture and a memory jerker...l had an aunt (step grandmother) who lived in aston lane (l thnk that was the name) and we would visit for tea quite often riding on the no.6 tram from newtown row to the perry barr terminus turning left an Barclays Bank and a long walk down aston lane...and of course later catching the no.33 bus for a night of dancing at the Crown and Cushion...that may have been a ford consul...must tell you l travelled all the way to Texas to learn to drive in a ford consul...loved that car and had it for years but parts were the problem.....Brenda

I m still a brummie at heart although left in 1968. So good to read all these lovely memories. I too had a beige for consult with stick gear change. Beautiful car and broke my heart to let it go but a dinky model stands on a bookcase in my home and i have painted it the same colour as mine was ! 70 yrs old and behaving like a kid. I had a friend called margaret langridge and she was the daughter of the man who owned dodds i am ashamed to say that when i went to play at her house we used to go in the back garden and down to the railway line to play ! My mum would have killed me if she had known. I too had an aunt in aston lane halfway down. I used to have one of those black money boxes at the municipal bank - does anyone remember these ? Does anyone remember terry thomas coming to open a mens shop near the birchfield cinema ? I got his autograph at the time but autograph book has long gone. I would hate it if i came back now i am sure. My friend, margaret adams lived in the tower block when it was first built. Unfortunately she died in the blast at ici - anyone remember that ?

The alley lead to medlam's workshop on the right where he made all sorts of wooden things and trolleys. He wore an old cloth cap and had a big bushy moustache - lovely man. He made me a marquetry picture when i was a little girl - over 65 yrs ago now 11

Sorry Jean, I meant Enid Goodwins' where we all went dancing in my day!! A bit further up from the Odeon on the other side of Birchfield Road.

Hi Jean

Looking at thread since I used to live on Walsall Road and worked in Birchfield Road. Your thread brought back memories - Enid Goodwins was in Livingstone Road off to the right ? I spent many a happy hour there with Albert Cotterill, Bill Cotterill, Denis Stockley, Alan Redfern - ring any bells, it would be about 1959 - 1965 - bit senile now so memory plays up !!

MEMORIES ARE LIKE GOLD - THEY NEVER TARNISH OR GROW OLD

Albeit a slightly damaged photo, but would I be right in thinking the building under construction behind the Old Crown and Cushion is the big Crown &Cushion (i.e. the great big pub, designed like a 1930s coaching inn) ? We've discussed the various C& C's on Birchfield Road before, and we know that the Old C& C sat in front of the big C&C until the big C&C was built, then Old C& C in front was later demolished. Come on folks, keep up! The road on which the little C&C stood is now, I think, the roundabout. Viv.

Crown and Cushion pubs junction Birchfield Road and Wellington Road

Enid Goodwins was originally in Birchfield Road in one of the old houses, have spent some good times there, got all my medals and a few boyfriends. Still dancing!!! My dancing partner in those days was a guy called Max, do not remember his surname, any recollections??????

Enids' was in Birchfield Road. I can't remember names now Kate, Enid had names for people. I know one of the lads I liked she always called Bright Eyes. My girl friend who I always went with was Barbara Jackson, she later got medals with a partner from Enids'

Am going to look at the number my Nan lived at Di when she was young and try to find out exactly where it was.

This is a lovely thread, I lived in Stoneleigh Road, which is just down a little way from Birchfield Road, from March 1957 when we were married until we left Birmingham in late 1959. I did all my shopping there, at the Co - Op, Wimbushes, Dodds, Englands for my shoes. So many memories on here, thank you all for taking me back it has been such a nice journey.

Do you remember a little wool shop Di an the corner close to Franchise street. I used to fetch Nan and Mom's wool from there. I can't remember the ladies name who owned it though?.

We were married in 1971 and lived in Woodridge (off Trinity Road, right by the Variety Artistes Club). We did most of our shopping on Birchfield Rd, at Mac Fisheries (on the site of the Birchfield Cinema), the bakers a bit further down (I think it was Baines), and a mini-market on the corner of Trinity Rd and Birchfield Rd called 'Bill The Bandit' that stayed open late. I think Wrenson's was still there at that time, on the opposite corner of Birchfield Rd and Bragg Rd to Mac Fisheries. I can also remember the manager of Lloyd's Bank standing outside smoking his pipe - a really nice man.

How this area has changed in the intervening 42 years! I drove along Birchfield Rd a couple of weeks ago and could have wept. Every shop seemed to be fast food, and the area was filthy. Still, the world moves on.

Yes, I remember that shop - can't think of the name though!
I will ask my mother when I speak to her at the weekend, she used to work at Wilkes, the other little wool shop in Perry Barr so she is bound to know the name.
