eric i have saved that one to my pc..i have asked the library to do a search for me for a photo of the globe and asked for an appointment for the week after next....as soon as i get a reply from them i will let you know.. even if i do get one i would feel honoured to have that painting hanging next to other very special pubs that you have painted for me...

my husband lived at no 87 berner street in 1965 is the house still standing
he lived in wellsley street before that

The street south of Gerrrard st soe not exist as a street any more, and only houses north of that on the west side remain. the lowest number is about 157.
 
hi josie the library say they do not have any photos of berners st but i shall keep looking..

I have just found out that my great great grandfather George Rachel lived with my great grandfather John Steven Rachel and great grandmother with my grandfather George Rachel at 74 Berners Street in 1911 when my grandfather was 9. Amazing.

we lived at 156 berners street right next door to the old school and four doors from the pub
on the corner of gerrard street
And if my memory serves me correctly many years ago i seem to recall i was in touch with lyn
And promised her i would try and meet her there but i never did for reason of some think or another
To have a tot with her and afew of the old guys whom i knew there as it was my local
eventualy i left and went to live in london for a spell
then i came back to brum and settled down mom went to live in edgebaston

Hello, does anyone know exactly where 139 Berners St was? It was my grandparents’ home until they were bombed out during the war. Was it close to Gerrard St? I know it was a terrace house and close to two schools.
 
Berner Street 2.jpg Berners Street 1.jpg Berners Street 3.jpg hi samantha and welcome...hopefully mikejee will spot your post and will be able to provide you with a map showing 139 although i can tell you that 139 was at the end of the street that as been demolished (the top half remains)...i would think the 2 schools you refer to would be lozells girls (which i attended) and lozells infants and juniors berners st started at gt king st went past burbury st park rising all the time it finished at lozells road...here are 3 photos of the street...the one with the two ladies shows the top end of the street looking towards lozells road and the other 2 shows the end where your gran lived as you can see they are getting boarded up ready for demolision..

Thanks Lyn, great photos! My uncle talked about going down to a shelter in Burbury Park in his siren suit the night the street got bombed so it does sound like it was close by there. Fingers crossed that mikejee spots my post, I’d love to see the location on a map!

happy to help samantha...i think seeing photos puts a bit of meat on the bones of our family history...quite sure mike will spot this as mapping is his thing...:)

My ancestor George Moore in the 1861 census was living at 14 Berner Street and working as a gun finisher.
The other people living on his street all seemed to have similarly creative jobs (there's a clock maker, silver chain maker, steel pen maker, and a jeweler, just on this page alone), so I feel that business in this area must've been booming at the time, but I can't seem to find much information online.
Does anyone know anything about the history of Berner Street, or have any old pictures or maps of it?
 
12 court was in the section of road between Clifford Street and Gerrard Street, this is the section of map that shows where number 6 was.

Hi, my post was moved to this thread but I think it was done so incorrectly. The street I'm looking for has no "s" at the end. It seems to be very definitely Berner Street, not Berners Street.
 
In some early directories (ie the 1862 Corporation directory ) it is referred to as Berner St, but this is the same street as Berners St.

hi wondering did anyone know my nan she lived in berner street number 113 her name was mary wilsonthe house was by the garage or coach place .i was born 1950 and lived there with nan my mom rosena and dad cyril and grandad of course i think my aunt clara uncle dan lived there to would be lovely to know if any one knew them thankyou .
 
hi christine and welcome sad to say that our member astonian passed away earlier this year but if you look at the map on post 105 you will see that the garage/coach station was much further up berners st..near to lozells road...no 113 which is also showing on map and was much further down and as far as i can see had no garage next to it...

its no trouble christine...hard for us to get things exactly right when we are trying to remember things as children...i can actually recall the coach garage as a child

if you save the map to your computer christine you will then be able to zoom into the map and enlarge it but if you go to post 109 there is another map which is larger and shows no 113 quite clearly

Hi Christine. I used to live next door to Mrs Wilson. I lived with my grandmother, Emily Oldfield at the second hand furniture shop, the other side of us were the Banhams. I remember Mrs Wilson very well, she was a very jolly lady, she loved a party.
