Hamstead Road Handsworth

A couple of actual images of the toll house and gate at the Hamstead Road, Lozells Road junctions where there were toll gates on both roads.Handsworth Villa Rd - Hamstead Rd Toll Gate. (2).jpg Handswoth Toll House Hamstead Rd .jpg

I have created this thread as we have a thread that covers Hamstead Road/Church Road, but not one that covers just Hamstead Road https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/hamstead-road-church-hill-handsworth.34162/

This thread is about Hamstead Road only.

Although the B&W timbered building has a sign "Toll House," but this building wasn't actually the toll house. (See previous posts)

A good view of the park lodge on Hamstead Road - not possible to get the same view on Streetview, but the lodge is still there and seems in good order.

having looked again at my photo post 5 i think the caption is wrong because hamstead road is quite a distance from somerset road.looking at this map the photo could have been taken at either hamstead hill or handsworth wood road..both near to somerset road...no clues as such so doubtful we could pin the location down for certain

ive found another photo of it looking in better condition and it still says taken in hamstead road so maybe this is correct after all..this says its looking towards hamstead hill

Hampstead Road, Handsworth.

We used to run Cubs and Scouts in Hamstead Rd Baptist Church next door (to the right). More than once we had cubs come in in tears as animals were being slaughtered in the back yard of Taj & Co and the gates were not closed properly so they could see what was going on. There was also a pub on the road behind (The Burton House) - we came out one night and someone had just been shot outside it. Wonderful area.......

I remember that shop, it was quite an open area at the back  I never saw anything but was aware it went on. I guess they were doing it to ensure it was Halal as required in the Muslim religion.

So disappointing, circa 1958/62 many a Friday and Saturday night is used to take the 29 night service from Snow Hill at mid night to 2.00am to that intersection and walk home without a care. If I missed the stop of traffic light I would stay on to the Villa Cross!
