Re: Surname - prottey

I can't help with the history of the name, but a Protty family kept a shop in Arsenal St Small Heath

Re: Surname - prottey

There don't seem to be any Prottys iin Kellys in Birmingham at the beginning of the 20th century (none up to 1921), but in 1940 the following (2 spellings) occurr:
Commercial
Nellie Prottey (Mrs) Newsagent, 20-21 Arsenal st small heath
Albert Protty. Ladies hairdresser.32 Kings road Hay Mills
Thomas Protty. Fried fish dealer, 63 Grange hill, small heath
Private
William George Protty, 65 Steyning Rd, south yardley

After this they seem to be, not exactly common, but present.

Re: Surname - prottey

Thanks for everyone who provided information reference my request, the spelling of the name prottey is missing an e (protty), would this be a common spelling error or has the Registrar's mispelt it?

If anyone has any information with the correct spelling of my surname it would be much appreciated - correct spelling is PROTTEY.

The kellys listing is as written, and , as they had both I can't see that as an error,

Re: Surname - prottey

Gazza, to answer your question..
....the spelling of the name prottey is missing an e (protty), would this be a common spelling error or has the Registrar's mispelt it?
'Tarone/Taroni/Tyrone....'
all the names above are the names from the same family!
For example, this is the family from censii & BMD's
1841 census
Ann Tarone abt 1811 Staffordshire
Guy Tarone abt 1811 Italy
Agustin Tarone 1840
1851 census
Ann Tyrone 35
(Not sure where Father Guy is)
Augustus Tyrone 11
Guy Tyrone 9 (Births Mar 1843 Taroni Geutiano Stafford 17Vol 145page )
1861Census
Gaetars Tarone abt 1812 location, Italy
Ann Tarone abt 1812 Staffordshire, England
(Not sure where Brother Augustus/in is)
Gaetano Tarone 19 abt 1843 Staffordshire

(This is the Augustus in 1851 census)
1881 He's AUGUSTINE TARONI 41 (He also had a son Guy c1884)
1891 He's TORONI Augustian 51
AUGUSTINE TARONI
Spouse: RUTH PRITCHATT
Marriage: 07 JUN 1870 Saint Mary, Aston Brook, Warwick, England

(This is the Guy in 1851 census)
1881 he's Guy TARONE 38
1891 He's TRONEY Guy 48
Marriages Mar 1879
Hampton Sarah Ann Birmingham 6d162
Spouse:TARONI Guy Birmingham 6d162
(There were at least another four Agustine's/Augustus' born between 1902 & 1919)

Due to lack of reading and writing skills in the last and previous centuries, names were often being spelled on records 'Phonically' and so often variations of the name came about within the same family.
Also, sometimes due to the naming patterns used in families. Often Grandparents, Parents, Sons, Daughters and grandchildren all had the same names. As was the case with their cousins, birth dates also coincided too with each generation. So first names, on some occasions and or both first and surnames were given a slight spelling change, in order to be able to tell one member of the family from the other. This you can see with the Taroni records above.

Tracing that family and putting everyone in their right place was a night mare. However it was a great challange and rewarding, as I was able to share the info' and my results with another forum member who was struggling to work out who was who!

Re: Surname - prottey

Pom, following on from your post on name spellings ...

At the time of the 2001 census, an enumerator called on a single parent in Chelmsley Wood. After adding her details to the census form, he asked for the names and ages of her 7 children who were all boys.

"Well, there's Charlie, he's two" she began. "Then there's Charlie, he's four... then Charlie, he's six....then Charlie ..."

"Hold on a minute" the enumerator interrupted "four of your children are all named Charlie?"

"They're all named Charlie" she explained "It's easier when I want to call them in for tea - I just shout CHARLIE! and they all come running in".

"But what if you only wanted to call one of them for something?" asked the bemused enumerator.

"Oh, easy ..... I call them by their fathers' names" came the reply. :D

Re: Surname - prottey

I am Colin Prottey, the son of William George Prottey and was raised at 65 Steyning Road, South Yardley. I am 67 years old, married with 2 children and 4 grandchildren. My father died in 1996 at the age of 84, and my mother (Annie Harriet Prottey) died in 2006, aged 92.
My father was one of, I think, 10 who survived into adult life. The siblings (in decending age order, as far as I can recall) were: Walter, Amy, William, Frank, Fred, Ernest, Violet, Ron, Leonard and Ivy (twins). Only Ivy is still alive. Most of them lived in the Yardley area.

They were a very colourful lot, none had more than basic education and I think all had either manual or 'blue collar' jobs. They were brought up under extreme hardship in the Small Heath area of Birmingham, and I recall my father telling me how poor they all were. I believe that more than one child died either shortly after birth, or when young, but I have no details. They were avid fans of dog- and horse racing, Ansell's Ale, allotment gardening and were very close to each other during their lives, dwespite contual bickering. There are now countless cousins most of whom had children and grandchildren. I am only in contact with a cousin Fred Prottey (son of Fred Prottey), though the granddaughetr of Walter did contact me via Friends Reunited some years ago. I would love to see any family history that has been compiled, as I cannot remember my father's father, but do remember Emily, his wife, my paternal grandmother. I think she died in the 1960's.

My father told me that the name Prottey (with the 'e') had derived from the Italian name 'Perotti'. He said that this originated with an Italian engineer that had come to Birmingham in the 19th century, which was booming due to the Industrial Revolution, but he sadly went bankrupt, so he changed his name - and the family were thereafter somewhat underpriviledged, and sadly seemed to have remained so. I don't know how reliable this information is.

I was always aware that there was also a number of 'Prottys' (no 'e') who were scattered around south Birmingam, but I never met any of them.

Should anyone have further information, I would love to hear of it. Equally, I am happy to try to dig deeper, should anyone feel the need. I am somewhat out of touch, as I left Birmingham when I was 25 and then lived and worked in many parts of the world until 2001.

Re: Surname - prottey

Welcome home Dr. Colin Prottey, I had a bodywork repairs to my car done by Protty Brothers at the Fox Mill trading estate off Greswolde Rd, Sparkhill, i believe William who retired after a heart attack and some years after, he lived in Steyning Rd, the younger brother who told me his name was Dean the last i heard of him he was still working on the Fox Mill trade estate and he lived in Greswolde Rd, their business card spelled their name as Protty, i hope these memories are of use to you. Len.

Re: Surname - prottey

Thanks for the information, Lencops.

I think story lines have become3 crossed. My father did indeed live in Steyning Road, from 1937 until his death in 1996. But he never had a car repair business in Sparkhill - he never learned to drive! He did have a heart attack in 1979. He always spelled his name with the 'e'. I have no0 knowledge of anyone called Dean.

This suggests to me there is/was another William Protty - presumably another strand of the family. I was always aware that there were 'Prottys' in the telephone directory, but I never met any of them. I and my father, God Bless him, descended from the 'Prottey' (with the 'e').

I would like to know how/when the Protteys and the Prottys separated. Maybe one of them could not spell. I can certainly vouch that my father could not spell - or write very well for that matter!

Re: Surname - prottey

Hello Dr Colin Prottey,

Would Gary Prottey be one of your relatives ?
He lived in a road off Garetts Green Lane , Yardley in the early 1970's.
He would now be in his early 50's and I understand is a Comedy Entertainer with the Mad Hatters. ( see Friends Reunited )

Re: Surname - prottey

Dear Bojalu,

This challenges my failing memory. I think that Len Prottey (the youngest of my uncles, who was also a twin with Ivy) married a girl called Lilian and I think they had a son called Gary in the 1960's. Len was tragically killed in a car crash, also in the 60's.

I do not know of any other Gary.

Re: Surname - prottey

Colin,

I am Garry Prottey born in 1967, my father is Walter Henry Prottey born in 1945 and his father was Walter Prottey who unfortunately I never met as he died in 1969 or there abouts.

My father had 2 older sisters June and Ivy and last I heard, June is still living in Australia, however, unfortunately Ivy passed away some years back.

I am one of six siblings, the oldest Karen you mentioned in a previous thread you had contact with a few years ago via Friends Reunited. The other siblings are John, Mark and Stephen (twins), myself and Susan.

I originally started this thread as I was trying to find information about the name and where it derived from.

Regards

Re: Surname - prottey

I know the surname but cannot recall how or why. It is most likely through my late father that I would have heard it.

Apologies - I really should read to the end of a thread before commenting.
