Getting Logged Out

A Sparks

master brummie
Just in the last few weeks I keep getting logged out of the website every time I close the window, despite ticking the 'keep logged in' box.

Any idea why this might be happening?
It is my work computer but it doesn't happen with another forum I use.
Thanks.

It has happened to me too but I thought it was my broadband which has been troublesome lately. I tried the "keep logged in" box also.
rosie.

Web sites create little files called "cookies" to save you having to re-logon to their web sites (your logon information is held in these cookies)

Normally all your cookies are saved when you come out of your browser or if you logoff your computer.

However if you have changed your computer settings to delete your cookies, or if you run a program to "clean up" your computer, this can delete your cookies and this means you have to re-logon to all your web sites.

You can also change your browser settings to delete all cookies when you exit the browser so have you or anyone else changed these settings?

I only got logged out when Warren was doing all those technical things. After that I logged back in and things have been fine. Did you change the web address when it updated to https at the start?

Janice

It seems to log me out if I have been away from the site for more than 24 hours. I know that on one of the Crete sites that I use, this is a security feature. Perhaps Warren can answer this question please.

Ah....that could possibly be why.
I had been away for a few days so not looked at the website - I seem to be still logged in this morning from visiting yesterday.

Unless it is set for some period shorter than 24 hours? The cookie is certain there as it shows up my username & password (encrypted) when I go to log in.

As I am the only one using this laptop (and using the site from here) I never log out. The only time it happens is when something technical has been done - then I have to log in again. That said, I do go on nearly every morning.

Hi Janice,

Yes, very strange as I too have sole use of this machine. I posted last night, yet it had logged me out this morning, and I'm not aware of any site maintenance done last night. No problem for me as it just means an extra couple of key clicks, just curious to know the reason.

Maurice

Strange! Opened up BHF having just switched computer on. Didn't have to sign in. Saw a new post on this subject, clicked to read the comments, took an age to open and then realised that I had been signed out during the transfer.
Not entirely off subject but email prompts have also become somewhat random. Sometimes you get an email but at other times you don't.

By default, XenForo will only email notify you on the first new post/reply after the last one you read. Any additional ones will not show up with new email notifications until you visit the thread and read the latest post which appears to reset the email setting, so you will get an email with the next response.

I'm not getting logged out either on my phone/work machine/server/laptop/ipad

There is no 24 hour logout, once you've signed in to should stay that way until you log out.

For those getting logged out could you please download chrome and try it just to see if it logs you out? I want to see if it's your browser settings.

I am using my work computer, I don't have one at home - I just use the internet on my smart phone and I don't have WiFi.
My browser at work is Chrome but, having looked at the settings, it looks like I need to download Chrome linked to a Google account, I do have a personal Google email but I don't want to link to this PC as other staff sometimes use it. I don't save any links to personal email accounts.

I will just have to not be lazy and log in when necessary ;-D I really don't mind.
Thanks for the help :)

If I was not using my own computers to look at the BHF I would always log out after use because if someone else had access to the computer with you still logged in they could change your forum password etc. I've tested with the EDGE browser (in my own computer) and it does not log me out. With the Chrome browser I only have to put the first letter of my username in and Chrome auto fills the rest with just my password to enter ... takes only two seconds ...:)

Another reason why I think it is set at the site end..... if you use Anthony Abrahams' Midlands Historical Data site, you can tick the box Keep me logged in until the cows come home and it will always log you out, and even if you go back in five minutes later, you will have to log in again.

Maurice

I use windows10 "Edge". If I receive an email notification of a posting I can use that to successfully fully gain access to BHF. But if I use the link from the start screen etc. I can get access to a screen that (i) tells me I am an online member but at the same time (ii) requires me to sign in to participate.

cant be the site otherwise everyone would be getting it, keeping you logged in only requires a cookie file, which is a small txt file that is stored in one of your folders on your machine, there really is nothing to it.

I Would suggest a factory restore of you browser and see if that fixes it.
none of my machines are effected in the same way and I have access to lots!

I have just used edge (something ive never done) logged in closed browser and went back into the site perfectly.

clear your browsing if your on edge,

... < -- top right of screen
then
settings
then
clear browsing data
then
check cookies etc
then
click clear

this is the address you should be using if your using a bookmark:

I'm not resetting my browser - I'll put up with logging in occasionally, and I know for a fact that with the Crete site I use you are wrong.

responses in order of number: -

1: I can't possibly be wrong, the world would implode.
2: See number 1 it's so important I have to mention it twice.
3: I meant this site having no knowledge of the Crete forum what so ever.
4: you just need to clear your cookies, since the one you have could of been for another domain, or even have the HHTP protocol registered against it instead of the HTTPS one.
5: See number 1.

When I log in, the forum sends a cookie named 'xf_user' to Chrome in my computer.
By default Chrome does not clear cookies when closed so 'xf_user' stays in my computer even when I shut down.
If the 'xf_user' cookie stays in my computer then I stay logged in.
The only thing that normally removes 'xf_user' in my computer is when I click the forum's 'log-out' button.

A query about when using the https protocol.
If when using https I click on an existing forum link, for example a link in post#5 in the Stevens Bar thread. Because the link was created when the forum was on https, it links to a post in the https protocol so it takes me out of https into the https. Not a problem provided the https can always be accessed because there are a lot of https links on the forum.

I'm using Firefox and it's been OK since I posted on Monday. I panicked today when you were "down" for a while.
Thank you Warren, I don't understand computers, my Husband does the "housekeeping" and that takes long enough with updates etc. I appreciate your work!
rosie.

Something is going wrong with posting replies. Every time I try to reply then I get a message telling me I have to be logged in (I am) - if I log in it posts my message but when I then click on "forums" it logs me out again.

It didn't do it on this thread - so perhaps it is the one I tried originally called "the windsor".
Janice

Can you send me a link to the one you had issues on it seems strange but could be a permissions thing.

Usually when it says that it's a permissions thing.

I am not sure what is happening as I have just replied to one thread with no problem. When I tried to go to the thread with the message I got the attached view. I am logged in as you can see my name "pjmburns" .
Will try again for link.
Janice
