City Centre Photographs

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Thankyou Di and Jenny, fabulous photographs, its sad to see how much we have lost of old Brum, I think the planners in the 60s must have been on something, either that or they all had shares in concrete companies.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

That site is wonderful, full of fabulous photos. If anyone wants to see any photos of mine (of Brum in last few years) please shout. Most are of the city centre mind.

Dolphie We would love to see your photos. Can you down load them to this thread for us all to enjoy?

We welcome anyone else who have also personnel photos of brum scenes, specially city centre photos.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Try this link, it's just an update of the first one I posted, and it does give you the 450 odd slides that the Uni released. I gather there are many more unseen. Thank you Jennyann for giving the link, such lovley photos.

I just checked that the link worked and remembered that if you click on and image it will enlarge, above the frame it says fine detail preview, it's worth clicking on that to get superb images.

Di what a great site and some great scene's, its taken me hours to see them all and what great detail you can get.
We will have to watch that pmc1947 doesn't use them for "Where is this No. ?)

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Good morning Bob, well I guess it is afternoon there. Very dull here but still warm.
Is it just old photos or fairly recent ones as well that you would like posted?

Have you seen this web site, it has loads of information but not just about the inner city. https://billdargue.jimdo.com/index.php

Have a good day.Mo

Bob

Heres an iconic one for your collection, of an area and time that is more relevant to our age group than the one preceding it or the one we have today.

Good day to you too Sakura,we have the same weather here today.
Well that's a good question what do others think?

I welcome old or new photos as one day the new ones will also be historic and enjoyed by that generation as we enjoy our older photos that where new once upon a time!

thanks for your input, I'm going to see your link now

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Love the photo on #38 reminds me of my hubby in the morning on a recent camping trip, you know how the grass is always wet. Someone thought it was really funny as they come from the Taiwan not really a Canadian thing either.

Phil when was that picture taken of the Rotunda?

Glad you like that site I found it by accident yesterday in connection to the forum.Mo

Re: City Centre Photo Album

We thought the walk only areas were nice when we were there in 2005 and the modern barrow boys like this flower seller.
I'm not sure how much has changed in the past three years but we were glad they designed the Bull Ring so that there is still a view of St Martins. Mo

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Great site Bob, when you think there can't be anything new something turns up.

Mo, there is nothing new around the Bull Ring, St Martins area. I like the traffice free area all around New Street, and not too much traffic in Corporation Street.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Bob, I'll certainly put some snaps onto this thread (I just thought as the photos were fairly recent people might not want to see them), I'll get on to it later this weekend if I can.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

I used to work in Civic Centre in early sixties, which is behind the Hall of Memory. It was a beautiful building. I think it isnt used for Council offices now tho.
My boss from Civic Centre took me to Marshall and Snelgroves for afternoon tea once and it was like another world for me (a 16 year old from Alum Rock)! There were mannequines walking around the restaurant modelling the dresses they sold. such a shame a lovely shop like that had to close.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Good luck with the project, Bob.

I collected together some images (with the help of forum members) of one of the city's greatest lost buildings, Barry's King Edward's School in New Street, demolished in 1936. For convenience I put them here.

Browsing through this thread and looking at the pics of King Edwards School I noticed this view wasn't there so here it is.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Thanks for the pictures all. The drawing of 1800 New Street (first post) is particularly fine. I think it must be looking west from Corporation Street area with the Old Christ Church still there. Corporation Street would not have been around then. I think that is right.
The one of Bridge Street is super too. That would be by the old coal wharf on the right and Cadburys Chocolate factory would have been on the right just over the bridge. All long gone of course but you get a feeling for the terrain. If you look at the picture of the old coal wharf it would be looking off to the right of the picture from the Bridge Street Photo.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

ChrisM's pages on the old High School are superb, and the presentation is ideal for a factual web site.
It is especially interesting to see the architect's original design, but it does not shows the two? towers which had to be demolished in 1936.
I just wonder about the two smaller exterior photos which are side by side. The detailing and especially the parapets do not quite match the other views and drawings, even the demolition pictures. It rather looks to me as if the facework was of terra cotta rather than natural stone - perhaps the photos were of the General Hospital or the Law Courts.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Thanks for kind words, Peter. I'll have a look at what you are saying.

I hadn't seen that image of New Street in the 1920s, Mike. May I use it? If you are happy with that, could you possibly let me have a higher definition scan of it, please - I should like to blow it up. (Via IM or I'll let you have my email address - thanks).

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Earlier this year we had a thread about Phyllis Nicklin's amazing slide collection of old Birmingham shots. Di Poppitt gave us a link to the Main Library where you can view over 400 coloured slides going back 50 years.
https://62.105.110.193/search/results.bhtml?collection_id=10032

Could anyone please advise me where one stands with this. Are these photos accessible to the public online after one registers? If so, how does one register? And/or is there anywhere a complete list of what is available?

I'm assuming that there exist a number of these images over and above those which appear on Keith Berry's wonderful site.

Thanks

Chris

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Hi Chris: Keith Berry does have Phyllis Nicklin's slides on his site. Whether they are all of them I don't know. If you Google Phyllis Nicklin you wil find that there are many links to her collection. I do not know of a composite list though.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Thanks, jennyann. The reason for my question is that I got the impression that Keith Berry's online collection comprises many of the Nicklin images but not all of them and I am wondering how to find out what the others - if there are any - precisely are and whether they are accessible.

Good idea - I'll do some Googling!

Chris

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Thanks, Mike.

That'll be fine as it stands and I'll make use of it if I may. Late 1920s, I imagine. And what an imposing - overpowering even - building the school is on the left.

On the right are the buildings which survived the Luftwaffe, mainly, although further down the modern Marshall & Snellgrove facade (which didn't) has yet to appear.

Re: City Centre Photo Album

Unfortunately I don't live in Brum and so can't help. I completely agree, but its not just the old buildings. Nowadays the average life of buildings seems to be getting shorter and shorter. When I first came to the city the "middle" bullring had just been built, and I'm sure that then no-one would have dreamed that within 40 years it would completely (except for the Rotunda) disappear from the face of the earth.

Re: City Center Photo Album

I went to Brum Center as promised in Jan and quite honestly if you have not been to the town center for 2 years, I doubt if you would recognize the area around Lewis's. So for all those members abroad and for members who haven't been there enjoy the new Brum scene's.
