Temple Row

One of my enduring memories, aged about 8, is walking down Temple Row, after meeting my Uncle Joe, and Aunty Ivy, off the train at Snow Hill. It was an Autumn day, and there were mass's of starlings, blackening the sky, swirling and diving in formation, captivating for a young un!!

A fine photo of the Great Western Arcade entrance in Temple Row in 1941 .... after it survived the bombing that destroyed the buildings to its right, down to the Bull Street junction.

As regards the starlings, we had a wonderful view of them from the flat roof of Union Chambers, because from up there, we could see over the whole of the city centre across to the farthest distances, and the formation of these little birds was an amazing sight to behold, especially in the winter months when resident starlings were joined from flocks having arrived from Scandinavia, so that thousands of birds would fill the whole sky for a short period before then swooped down together to fill the trees in the Cathedral grounds.

My brother and I had the job of mopping out the Great Western arcade each weekend, before the entrance was opened up for the public, and that was hard work for young teenagers I can tell you, but we were proud of the work we did, especially in the late 50,s when the arcade looked at its best.
Good old memories

I just want to say how pleased I am to see that people are still contributing to this forum I started many years ago. One small road in Birmingham has brought back so many memories for you all, and I’m so glad you continue to write your memories and support for Temple Row. I am now in my mid eighties, but with your support, I can still look back over my years living in Temple Row with fond memories
