OLD AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS

The next picture is rather vague -old houses in Lee bank 1960, few silly thoughts, love the wooden fencing ( pailings- is that the name?). The Inner Circle bus stop - by request - of course. A rather battered rubbish bin - heavy metal thing and the first house across the road with the bay window, net curtains and right onto the pavement.

Forgot about those metal bins on Bus Stops always seem to be full of wasps

Next pub is the Wellington - Corner of Balsall Heath Road and Mary Street, like the symitry of the view we have here - central door, leaded windows either side first floor couple of small bay windows either side of the sign and on the second floor a row of three small windows. Telephone box which was on every corner, just noticed the two small windows on the side too.

The rising sun is the next pub we have - I am afraid rather a stark image - I had to stretch the limits to get a viewable image - probably find a better one in a few rolls time !!

Corner of Heneage Street and Windsor street taken in September 1961, brick built but everything on the ground floor either covered in wood or a leaded window, surrounded by newer factory buildings that don't seem to have been there that long, also the scattering of cars to remind you of the era.

Not sure if I have posted this one - its the Old Bull Ring from 1910 - or if it has been posted before - sure you will point it out if I or it has. Trying to work out the location that the photo was taken am I right in thinking top of St Martins? or am i totally wrong?View attachment 212165

another Pub this one is Woodman Inn Sherlock Street all dark wood and leaded windows, three storeys at the front stepping down to two at the back / side. Next door to the left is some serious boarding up and the land to the left of that seems to be cleared - not sure of a year or the actual location .

We now move onto Roll 53 - this is mainly covering the construction of the Middle Ring Road, taken in August 1991with lots of rubble, fencing and destruction.
As most of the images cover works the locations are vague - I will post the images and if I know where they are I will put them in.

The first image is where it all started - many questioned the construction of the white elephant underpass, but turns out it saved millions of pounds and allowed the time for the land purchases to let the work go through smoothly

Crossing what is now the traffic island and we can see the work to create the roundabout, Lodge Road is to the left of the white building hiding behind the Belisha Beacon , and Heaton Street now goes to the right of the lampposts. Took a lot of studying to notice the blocks of flats are no longer there, I was going to ask when they were removed but remember street view and a rewind to 2014 has them still there so but not September 2015

We now turn around to look back up the road with the underpass and Key Hill, we can see from the signs the delays and inconvenience that the project caused and moving from A to B even locally would have been a challenge - but none of this stopped the locals going shopping.
I also noticed the lack of security to the site - bit of netting and thats all.

Next we seem to be standing on the central reservation looking down Icknield Street, the bridge in the distance is the replacement for the original single carriageway one although the building are still in place - this is what was there _-

This picture shows the infrastructure that was needed for this project - road widening, new drainage bridges and demolition

One of the many casualties was this small garage - obviously been there years, the brick built frontage was original and large extension at the rear seems to have evolved over time - like all the missing fencing too !!, Now replaced by the Jet garage, and the bus stop is no longer there - never sure of the "shelter" offered as there seems to be more open space than cover.

We now move to Key Hill and one of the pillars and rear wall of the Cemetery, unfortunately if you turn to the right the land is exactly as it was left once the road works had finished - what once was a cark park is now an overgrown eye saw. You can alos get some idea of the slope on the road at this point .
