My mother worked at the Apex, she got off the bus near the Aldridge Road fire station just as a huge fire burst through the factory roof, she dashed into the fire station to tell them, one of the firemen said "Ok missus we'll deal with it."

Nice bit of detective worth. Thanks for posting. A story from when the building was an operational fire station. There was a problem backing into the appliance room, the wireless aerial kept fouling the ceiling. So, the Station Officer in his wisdom chopped 6 inches off the aerial, then wondered why he couldn't raise Fire Control. He should have known that the length of the aerial is dependent on the Brigade wireless frequency. He had a job to live that down.

Birmingham Fire & Ambulance Service. From !947 until 1972 accident/emergency Ambulances where stationed at various Fire Stations throughout Birmingham crewed by Fire Service personnel. The combined service worked extremely well as in other parts of the world. The picture is one of two Humber Ambulances stationed at Central Fire Station when I was there in the 60s.
The combined service in operation following a severe fire with casualties. The ambulance was always on stand-by at 5 pump fires or more for the safety of personnel. As in my case suffering from burns and a second time when I was pulled out of a collapsed factory fire I was treated on the spot and removed to hospital very quickly indeed.
Happy memories of cycling from Small Heath to Wash Lane Stechford in the late 40s to take my Father's supper when he was on duty for 24hrs. The steps to the right led to the Recreation Room and instead of the Bedford Pump Escape S the picture I would admire the "Open Show Boat" Pump stationed there at that time. A private house was built on the site with only the pillars left of the old station.

My Grandfather William (Bill) Cheshire played on the Band 1930 on Clarinet. I think he is the four man along from the right.

Hi, my great grandfather was Walter Hayes, he was the father of my Grandma Olive Annie Ellis (Nee Hayes). She never spoke of her father and I have only very recently discovered this Fire Service connection. Would it be possible to arrange to meet if you are still a member of the WMFS Heritage Group?
