Sutton Park History

No it wasn't Dave we used to swim from the 'beach' side at the end of the little bridges. I loved to swim and sit on the island. I bet Bren and I were there at the same time. It was like my second home. I must admit I was a little wary of the pike as Bren says they were quite a size. I used to go fishing on the punts with my brother.
 
Thanks for the walk around Bracebridge, memories memories. We used to swim to the island from the end of the forty bridges side, in the late forties. I used to underwater dive in Darwin, Australia, for many years but the sharks there didn'y worry me half as much as those pike. Regards, David.
 
We saw a pike a couple of months ago in the lake just cruising past us but had left the camera in the car. It is lovely to think that it takes just 5 mins by car and you are in the park I love the place. David any other part of the park you would like photographed. Jean..
 
Coming from Ladywood it was an adventure to go to Sutton Park.
We would get the train from New st station and hide in the toilet before Vauxhall & Duddeston station where the ticket inspector got on, remembering not to put the "engaged" lock on the toilet door because the inspector would usually walk past if it showed "vacant".
If we were ever caught we would give a fictitious name and address and say we had lost our money.
 
Thanks Jean you are very kind, did you see my short story 'Doreen' posted in the story/poem section? I took your advice and sent some work to the site. Took me some time to sort it out but what can you expect from an old bloke. Wouldn't mind a photo of the Four Oaks Gate with me standing there at twenty years of age but I expect its asking too much, I lost my last one, and everything else, in Cyclone Tracy Christmas Eve 1974. Hi everyone,
Before you all get totally stuck into Christmas, from my Wife Marjorie, the Children and all the Grandchildren (11) may we wish you a very merry Christmas and peace, happyness and good fortune for 2010.
I had to work away last year but this year it is my turn to be at home, the youngest Grandchild -Ewan - will be 2 years of age on Christmas Eve so this will be my first Christmas with him.
My roots are still in Sutton Coldfield and the park, at one stage I thought I was loosing touch with the area but thanks to the Forum, and this thread with all it's wonderful photograph's and storie's, I now feel part of Sutton again. Keep the thread alive girls and boys, more so for all the folks who live abroad.

Bill even coming from about 3 miles away was always a treat to spend a day in Sutton Park as Lad and were those Pools Cold at anytime of the year
 
I also like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and a Happy New Year from Down-under. Walking through the snow in the Gumslade, searching for the tracks of the wildlife and remember times long gone. Happy days. Regards, David.

Those photos of the beach at Bracbridge took me back to the early 60s when we used to have a few beers in the Crown pub and then on a balmy summers night all ramble down to
Crown gate entrance to Sutton Park in the late hours of saturday night and Sunday morning and go skinny dipping. ...Great days....ooooh the memories.
 
Dave that was smashing the picture of the beach were we used to swim to the island. I never did skinny dipping unlike my brothers.....oooooh our John! The video bought back so many memories I used to go with my Dad every Sunday morning on this journey through the park and out through Windley Gate to visit my aunt who lived off Monmouth Drive. I know you can't do it now as they have closed it off. The most exciting trip was always Christmas day when we would visit and I knew I would get a present.
