See Birmingham by Post Card

I am almost at the end of my pictures/photos but a friend has loaned me his mothers small collection. The big problem is remembering what has already been posted. Here is an undated one of Aston Cross.

I think that pic has been posted a few months ago - it would be a little after the Witton 3X tram route was replaced by the 39 bus (31 December 1949) but some time before the Erdington trams (last in the city) went in July 1953, because other pictures shown Ansells brewery with a big advert (The home of Ansell's) covering the blank corner by early 1953.

We never get tired of seeing these post cards and in this one there is a lot to "look" at. Peter, has described the tram and the bus in the picture. The No. 2 Tram with the Black's ad which had already had a fairly long run on it's way into Brum and the No.39 at the stop in front of Ansell's were the bottle checking department was. The Royal George pub can be seen. The clock, of course, and the entrance to the underground Gentleman's toilets.

You must all understand that there has been so many posts on this thread that I may re-produce one un-intentionally.
This is an unusual one of The Hall of Memory.

I put this view of the Hall of Memory (#770) as being around the late 1950's.
Who could have guessed then that this 'work of art' below would appear nearby in the future and would be set fire to and be gone without trace after being there only a short time.

Sorry to be difficult, Stitch, but I think the picture was a bit later than the early 50s. I left Brum in March 1959, after working in the city council office which dealt with things like new statues for over three years, and have no recollection of that sculpture. Nelson's statue yes, the other dasy I found scribbled measurements of the old plinth in the back of my 1958 diary, and may post them soon, after I have scanned them of course.
Also, looking at the background, I would think that the pic dates from the 70s or even early 80s.
Could be wrong of course.

I think Stitch was refering to the picture of the hall of memory in #770, not the plastic hoard, which I believe was 1981.

Now I read it as Stitcher referring to the Erdington High Street picture. Hope I am right. That picture was posted not too long ago and it was the early l950's. I commented on the thread about it. Erdington High Street was absolutely mad on Saturdays in those days, just throngs of people shopping up and down both sides of the High Street. The complete contrast always was going to Church and Sunday School on Sundays, the place was absolutely deserted after the church services and especially in the afternoons on Sundays.

I like that card very much because that's the Erdington High Street I
grew up with.

The Hall of Memory and Erdington High St pictures are both early 50s. The dispute is about the fibre Glass statue which was not posted by me.

Peter, I think in my posting of the 'utterly butterly' statue photo, my write up was misleading as you have noticed. It was Stitchers photo of the Hall of Memory that I was putting a guess on the date of. The controversial statue came on the scene many years later. I have edited my posting accordingly and apologise.
Sorry folks,
Mike

Meanwhile here is Erdington High Street in the quieter 1930's

My apologies to Stitch for not reading the posts carefully enough. And thanks to Mike for correcting me - no need to apologise of course., but thank you
Peter

You know I never really liked the "utterly butterly" statue. I personally accepted it because I thought it in many ways did reflect Birmingham
and it's past in a contemporary way. No one seems to mention it's existence these days.

Now for a card of Steelhouse Lane before they put top covers on the trams.

Mike, do you know that to be Steel House Lane. It looks a lot like Moor Street to me but I am probably wrong.

A not often seen view of New Street as seen from the junction of High St.

Rupert,

motorman-mike's post card is definitely Steelhouse Lane. I have many with the same view taken at different dates.

Have just been looking through the old pictures. Feel quite nostalgic. I worked in town in the late 50's and it all looked so familiar. Also the one of the Maypole pub. I live just a little way from there now and remember it well. Years ago the Maypole was deserted and had very few shops. What a different story today with Sainsburys, Aldi and lots more. I loved the look of the old Maypole pub and felt very sad when it was demolished. Does anyone remember the old Maypole picture house. Freezing cold. I lived at Wythall before I married and many a time had to walk home as if the snow was too deep the buses only went as far as the Maypole thats if you were lucky, but they were happy days. Must be older than I thought.

I remember the Maypole cinema and I remember it being demolished it must have been around 1962. I can't say that I ever used it though.

Hi Rupert, as the card quotes Steel House Lane I took it that is what it shows, but old cards are not always reliable in their captions. Perhaps it is Moor Street, but so far before our time wouldn't like to say.

1938 and the trams have their own right of way on the Erdington Bypass
