First Record Bought?

Frothblower, that song "All I have to do is dream" has so many memories for me. It was the first time I had ever heard the Everley Brothers, and I was sitting in a car outside the Sombrero Coffee Bar with some friends waiting to go on to a party. I always loved the song and it always reminds me of that evening :)

We went to see the Everley Brothers at Cornwall Coliseum about 20 or more years ago and were so disappointed as they didn't sing any of their old songs.

i think i bought shout by lulu and then downtown by petula clark. or it may have been the other way round. still love them both even now. wales.:)

Everley Brothers - Bye Bye Love.

One of my sisters first records was by Buddy Holly- It's Raining in my Heart,and she had it played at her husbands funeral in 1999,the words were so fitting.

I saw Jess Conrad in the play Wendy,he still had the twinkle in his eyes.
 
In the early 60's I got a stereo turntable from the surplus-radio shops in Hurst St.
I connected it to 2 separate amps and speakers and went out to the local record shops to get a stereo LP. None of them had got any and didn't know much about them. I had to go to a city centre shop which I think was called Murdochs maybe near Lewis's. The only stereo LP they had was Stravinskys Firebird Ballet. I wasn't a classical music fan but just had to have a stereo LP and bought it. It was quite good after I had finished fiddling with the controls on separate amps and found the right place to sit.
Bit different to nowadays !
 
The 1st record I bought was Travelling Light - Cliff Richard I bought it out of some Birthday Money I had , sure it was 1959 as I thought it was my 10th Birthday, was I chuffed with myself at the time? lol:D
 
I am not 100% per cent sure about the first record I bought. It could have been "Davy Crockett" King of the Wild Frontier. Someone sat on it not too long after if I remember rightly. My favourite was the music from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and I bought the EP for that. Would be 1961. Lovely memories just reading other people's choices. Judy, I have great memories of "All I have To do is Dream" by the Everly Bros. What a shame they didn't sing any of their old songs when you went to see them. You can find just about all of these songs on Youtube.com.
 
We were too poor to own a record player and I had to rely on the juke box at a cycling café called "The Cat in the Window" on the Warwick Road, Knowle, to listen to my favourite records; 3 selections for 1 shilling. By 1958 I was working but all my spare cash went into model aircraft building or cycle equipment. It was 1964 before I bought my first record, "I want to hold your hand", The Beatles. Shortly after that I bought a Gerard record deck and with an old radio built my own record player, all inside an old 9" TV cupboard. I played every kind of music from Beethoven to Bob Dylan, Charles Trenet, Wagner and even La Marseillaise!:beam:

Mysterymermaid - I used to have to get the middles to fit into the 45's as well! My Mom and Dad had a cafe called the Empire Milk Bar in Quinton on Hagley Road West, opposite what was then the Holly Bush pub. We had a juke box in there and all the boys and girls used to congregate there. When the man came to refill the records on the juke box he used to let me keep what I wanted but they all needed centres to play them on an ordinary record player. The one I remember I used to swoon over was Eden Kane singing Forget Me Not. I loved that one - must have been the early 1960's. I still have it, and still love it now but don't have anything to play it on. I keep promising to get myself a player for all my old records.:)

Judy, for around 50-£60 you can now buy a record player that will play 45s 78s etc, and you can get them with a usb connection so that you can transfer all of your old discs digitally.

We nearly bought one in the January sales, we have one at work, we have that much on the PC we have a dedicated one just for music, its great have made up loads of CD's from it.:)
 
judy. i bought one a few months ago and me dads got one. plays the old records great plus its got a radio. dads is a radio and also plays tapes. lyn:)
 
Yes, I know you can get them at reasonable prices now, it's just getting round to it. The ones you mention Astonite with the USB connection sounds like the one to go for I think. I have a box of old records LP's 45's 78's that I would love to play again. So I think I will make a point of getting one in the next couple of months. There were some advertised in the Saturday paper that looked good. Judy

Have an admition to make folks. I can't remember. Don't laugh but when I was just a kid my dad uses to play Baby face for me all the time and I loved it. Am I sad or what?????.... Jean.
 
Hi Judy 39, I used to go to that Milk Bar opposite the Holly Bush every Sunday night after the pictures - this would be about 1956/57. The cinema was the Odeon?? at Quinton. Opposite this cinema about 1954/55 was a transport caff and they had a jute box which is where I first heard Elvis.

Sounds as though the Milk Bar you went to was the same one that my Mom and Dad had, although we would have been there from about late 1960-1963 I think. A few years after than the time you went there. I know it was a popular meeting place for boys and girls in Quinton, although I was in my early 20's and did all my socialising in town in those days, so didn't know any of those who used the cafe!! We lived above the Milk Bar.

Yes, at the top of the hill there was the Warley Odeon which you went to.

Hi Judy, Yes you were a few years after me. The cinema we went to was in the opposite direction to wht Warley - near to where the no. 9 bus terminated. Thanks for your reply.

From the replies of forum members I wonder if you listen to "Brian Matthews" on Radio 2 on Saturdays from 8-00..........10-00 as he plays all music from this era:)
 
Hi. Peter. I listen to this programme most Saturdays, he has been doing the same sort of show for over 20 years, good listening for us old uns.
