Another casualty of the recession and the loss of our heritage, the Yew Tree on Brookvale Road Witton has now closed down.

Can't believe it ! had many a good night in there in the late 70's and again in the late 80's when I was resident in Brum, even met my wife there

Oh no me Mom worked there in the 1950s and I use to have a drink there Sunday evenings when I was doing National Service:(

Oh no from me too used to meet up there with the lads on the way to the match. Always had a hot pork roll and a pint to set us up. Pete would drop me off knowing I was in safe hands with the Holte enders. Very sad indeed Zak.:(:(. Jean.

oh no from me too! i lived just a few yards away on brookvale road in the 50`s and 60`s. as a child i would collect any bottles and take them back to the outdoor for a few pence. what a shame its finished

Oh no Shera so did your hadsome brother Eric live there too.:rolleyes: No. 113 if my memory serves me correctly. Mums the word. Jean.

I had my farewell drink there before going into the Army, Sept. 1953 - I used to live in Brantley Road. I've been in there once since that night. George.

dont know about the HANDSOME bit jean , but yes, eric lived there at no. 113 along with his mom and dad and 6 brothers and sisters :D

Just let my twins and nieces husband know and they are all gutted.:cry: Oh those hours before the Villa will stay etched on my mind for ever. Sometimes can't remember much of the football though.:rolleyes:. Jean.

Does anyone remember the wall-painting on or near the Yew Tree pub of a man up a ladder? Or is my memory really screwed up?

This was the first pub I ever went into with my dad, for a pint.

Big Gee

Mossy

Just had a quick search on Google and:

post by Fairley to this forum in 2008: "Hi I used to occasionally drink in the Ywe Tree between 1959-1964 I lived not for from the pub. The one thing that used to fascinate me was the Ansells advert on the side of the wall. A picture of of a man up a ladder painting the Ansells sign".

All on the Birmingham History Forum, folks!

I knew I was right...and I knew my wife was, too, more to the point...

Big Gee

At christmas they put a father christmas on the ladder.

There may have been one on the pub at the Yew Tree,I don't know that area.

What I do know because I was brought up in Erdington that the man up the ladder on the building next to the Cross Keys was painting.

Whilst I have been posting this I called my sister who has always lived in Erdington and has always frequented the Cross Keys.
She says he was a painter and the firm was called Cashmores

Perhaps there were 2,one near the Yew tree,I am sure if there was someone will have a photo.

Just got out my Erdington book and there he is,up a ladder and above him a very large advert that says SIGN SERVICE.

What a shame that yet another watering hole has closed.
The place was heaving a few weeks ago when the Villa were at home - mind you - can a couple of busy hours really keep a place going ? it appears not.

Back to the man on the ladder in Erdington.
He is still up that ladder slightly faded but still there.

My dad Used the Yew Tree Pub after his shift at Forgings and Pressworks it was always his lunch break pub as well after working in the smoke and grime he needed a beer. He was also summuns for riding his bike home intoxicated with his mate on the crossbar after a session there. This was in the 1950s Moss in Aus

I managed the Yew Tree in 1983 for 4 months until the brewery decided to turn it into a tenancy, so had to move on:redface:
Such good memories & good customers:)
