Had a gardening session this morning. Mainly cutting back grass to give other plants a chance. Tidying the bug hotel which now has a thatched roof 
A litter pick round the Field turned up one and a half sacks of rubbish - quite good - we sometimes get a lot more than that sadly.

At the risk of boring you - more photos from the Friends of the Fields Group.
I keep posting because we are working to preserve a little bit of "green history"
In today's session we placed some new signs to indicate the paths we have created through the small Woodland to the Orchard and the Field itself. Main Street is so called because when I asked the man mowing the main field if he would widen the entrance to make it more obvious and he managed, somehow, to get his mower almost the length of it - so it became wider than intended. The other names are self explanatory.
To add to the info the signs were made for us by BHF's own Morturn. Thanks for the contribution to our work.

Annie - who took the pics - was busy googling Oak Galls but I decided to post the pic anyway without waiting to find out. I didn't know there were so many different types of Oak Gall.

There is nothing on the paths they just lead to different sections of the Field.
Woodland Walk is beautiful in spring.
Orchard Way leads past the orchard (apples, plums, cherries, pears and we hope , greengage and damson). Plus a medlar.
Main Street was cut through wild raspberry canes and blackberry bushes).

A busy session last Saturday - planting more saplings (wild cherry, silver birch and rowan). we had a group of younger helpers who set to digging and planting these.
The rest of us planted a newly cleared woodland area with plants and bulbs (wild tulips, daffodils, winter aconites and wood anemones). difficukt to photograph but some greenery just about visible.

Our last white rowan is dying (has a fungus growth known to grow on decaying wood) and will have to come down. Council are hoping to leave it until January when the white berries might have been eaten by waxing visitors from abroad.
We are investigating the cost of replacements but not to go on the car park.

Apparently if a tree senses it is dying it produces a lot of fruit in an attempt to ensure the species doesn't die out - if I can put it that way.
Ironically it was the abundance of fruit which led me to photograph the berries and then I saw the fungus. Later a former tree surgeon told ne what it meant.

That’s a shame as it looks to have taken hold.
One note says… “It doesn’t immediately kill the tree but weakens the structure, increasing the risk of branch failure… If this is a valued or near-path tree, it would be worth: Having an arborist (tree surgeon) inspect for structural soundness, Possibly reducing weight on infected limbs.”

4 of us plus Frida planting today. Not a lot to see today but fingers crossed for next year.
For those interested we planted - musk mallow, cowslips, betony, yarrow, ladies' bedstraw, cranesbill, agrimony, salad burnet, woundwort and filed scabious. Just a few plants of each to try to create a varied patch. So fingers crossed.
Also an Old Man's Beard (travellers Joy or wild clematis) to hopefully climb in the wood land.
