where on birchfield road ??

In my photo in post #8, I can't quite work out which direction our camera was pointing on the Crown and Cushion car park. The photo below shows the pub at an earlier date when the underpass was being built.

shame the original crown and cushion was demoliished..its the one i think most of us remember......ive got this pic of it being demolished...

That's a sad photo Lynn. Although I do remember one particular night there when a big fight broke out and all us girls sought refuge in the the ladies toilets. We were marooned for (what seemed like) quite a while. It was terrifying! Viv.

Viv,
This link is a little snippet of the Wellhead Brewery,it was in Wellhead Lane,Perry Barr.
I believe the Wellhead pub is still there on the corner of Wellhead lane and Franchise St.

The son of the landlord of the Wellhead Tavern was in my class at Junior School in the late 50's/ early 60's.
Their surname was Jones

Sparks,
It couldn't be the same landlord, but this is a story worth re-telling.
during the war when there was a raid on the gaffer of "The Wellhead" used to go along Franchise St.at great risk to himself, gather together all the old folk and escort them to the safety of his pub cellar.
Just another unsung Brummie hero.
The Photo.is inside "The Wellhead" for the pensioners xmas party 1958...is there anyone you recognise.

Great story and interesting photo - no, I don't recognise anyone.
I imagine they were people all local to the pub and although I went to Birchfield school I actually lived towards the Great Barr side of Perry Barr.

Just catching up on postings. Ray thanks for posting this artcle on Councillor Evans and the Wellhead Brewery. Takes a leap of imagination to visualise the area as once rural and Cllr Evans romping around the countryside hunting and shooting!! Very interesting. Thanks. Viv.
