Anyone remember what that bit of Wheeler Street looks like? It certainly fits - shoe repairer at 209, secondhand shop at 211 (formerly corn merchant/factor), something looks to be going on at 215 (corsets?) and there are shops further down - 243???

Maurice

EDIT: By 1971-2 there wasn't a single business between Clifford Street & Gerrard Street

The minivan is registered in Walsall (235 RDH) in a series that was issued from August 1961 to February 1962.
And Wheeler Street is on a similar hill...sounds like William Street too...

possible maurice..ive got pics of wheeler st..i will just go and look at them...wheeler st sloped as it still does....

Lyn,

Depends upon whereabouts in Wheeler Street Lloyd's pic was taken. I was trying to match the chimney stacks, but there's quite a lot of variance just in one picture. I worked at Lucas GKS in late 50s/1960 so must have walked down there a few times, but can't remember a danged thing about it now!

Well, I'm two hours ahead of you out here, so I'm off to bed - catch up with you again tomorrow.

cheers

Hi Lyn,

Yes, it looks a pretty good match, both on Kellys and with Lloyd's picture. There must be other pics of Wheeler Street kicking about that would cover the section between Clifford Street and Gerrard Street.

hi maurice..i have just this one..its going from gerrard street towards clifford st on the right hand side coming from lozells road...

i have spoken to dad today and yes he remembers a shoe repairers and second hand shop and ladies undies shop all close by in wheeler st but he cant recall it ever being called the shoe hospital....for some reason he suggests wilton st....he was getting a bit tired by then so i didnt press it any further....i will take him and mom a copy of the pic and show them...

I have found the following William Streets which may narrow the search.

18 Lozells Road to Clifford Street B19

55 Granville Street to 81 Islington Row. B15

off 90 Booth Street, Handsworth B21

William Street North off 350 Summer Lane. B19
