No good anyone under 30 trying to remember this. I think that leaves a few of us, and you could always guess.

Mike can we have a clue please i have been all over the internet trying to find anything like it

I didn't know what the costra nostra was but will pay more attention in the future. Learn something every day. Ta Alf.

Alf I've seen a lot of those horse heads here in Belgium on places where they slaughter horses for the meat. Is/was it an abattoir?

Graham.

No one is anywhere near it. The building was originally built for one purpose, but then used for another, and then another. It first appears in Kellys sometime between 1892 and 1896

Graham's post crossed with mine. It was never an abattoir. It did have several uses though, as I previously said.

Who's a clever lad Alf. That was the original use of the place. Now you've got to say where it was.

I think i'll have to give it to Alf. The building was first used as a blacksmith, then a veterinary surgery, and finally as the base of Borthwick's, meat salesman (though it was never an abattoir, graham). It was at 3/5 Sherlock St East, which ran down the edge of the meat market. Picture of the whole building is attached. The first occupant had an appropriate name - Edward Smith

Congratulations Alf
