Colin

I don't think so mate, I think thats you hiding behind the table. Its certainly not me. I would have been to old for playing hide and seek then.

Do you mean The Saddlers Arms? good pub, wrong answer.

Neville

No sorry another wrong answer.

Phil

phil it looks to me as if there is a boy just behind the table and is it some sort of memorial as unless its a trick of the light there seems to be sort of wreaths laid around it. at least tell me i am getting warmer.

If you look at post 31 you will see that I mentioned the lad behind the table to Colin. He or the table have nothing to do with the location.

As no one seems to be getting anywhere near a solution and most of the answers seem to be concentrating in the south of the area.

I will relent and give you the only clue I am going to give. It is not in south Birmingham

Phil

I'm still coming to terms with it not being a recent photograph - ;D

Is it close to Sutton Road on the right hand side down from the Abbey Church? Erdington that is.

Some of you are getting very close now, but this place is known by a particular name. I assume its been known by this name since before we were all born.

I believe you, though I don't think many more will. I'll have to see if I can sort out a hard one as opposed to these easy ones of late.

Sorry I don't know what sort of proof you require, I can quote you the book it came from. It was from the Images of England series entitled "Erdington". You could get yourself a copy for £11.99 I believe mine cost, because I'm sorry but I have loaned my copy of the book to a friend at the moment. If you can wait until he returns it I will scan the whole page for you.

Though I can't see the point its only a game after all, but never let it be said that I left anybody in doubt.

The original photo was taken 123 in 1875 years ago, and from the looks of the buildings in the photo I don't think they would have remained standing until the end of the century.

Phil

PMC, I don't want to be a bore and I am not being critical in any way but I find what you are doing here very interesting. If I may take this thread just a little further...

Look at the Ordnance Map below in conjunction with your photo and Google Earth junction of Mason Road/High Street/Orphanage Road, Erdington. At the above GE junction you will see a column erected and I wonder if it is on the spot of the one with the lamp on in the old photo. If so then just maybe someone standing by the old village green and looking west across to High Street would have seen the buildings on High Street about 1/4"(sorry) above the word Post Office and to the left (reffering to the map below). There seems to be a jutting out of the roof at the bottom of the building that may have been the rigid awning in the photo. Maybe that was the post office in the photo. Just below this was the Swan Inn.

If anyone is interested who does not use GE I can post a picture.

Rupert

What you say could be quite true, but I have to tell you I have no knowledge of Erdington at all. You may have read that if I leave the inner city areas of Birmingham I get a nose bleed.

I would think that the lampost in the original photo is the same one that is in photo 1 of these group that I am posting foe you to have a look at.
