Where is This? 181

Phil

Gone, but not forgotten.
I don't suppose for one moment that this will confound anyone half as much as my previous try. but it might get one or two guessing. It was certainly around within my living memory, but I don't remember it even though I must have passed it by many a time. But I should imagine some one will recognise it.

Hi Maggie,

It's coming down some hill, thats plain to see but not Soho I'm afraid.

Maggie

I have probably done one or two in the locality of Hockley in the past, but just for you I will do another in the near future. I won't say when because that sort of gives a head start. So keep your eyes peeled.

Anything is possible if you ask two questions at once, which do you think it is? Don't forget I still will want to know the name or use of the building.

Phil

Dek

I think you have the wrong building, it was purpose built and remained in the same use until demolition in the early 60's.

once again phil ive no idea...looks like another history lesson coming up for me lol...

The number of large windows give me the imppression it may have been an Art College, Drawing or Architects school or office. Just a guess mind you.

No right answer yet, and beamish I wouldn't give an clue this early in the game.

Phil

Phil i,ve had this idea the building looks to be built in the style of a pumping station, could it be something to do with the canals somewhere by a large set of locks.Dek

Dek

I shouldn't be giving clues this early but, you are moving away from the answer when you was getting warm.

No sorry its not or never was a police station, I did use the phrase "keep your eyes peeled" but it was not meant to be taken as a clue in any way. Surely it's a little early for those. Mind you I did tell Dek to have a little recap.

Phil

This one must be too hard for you, has no one got an idea? Have a think and if no one can come up with a suggestion I will see if I can come up with a clue. This is getting like trying to extract teeth.

Phil

Thanks Phil I have the dentist in the morning. Mind you I don't mind at all. Would it have been the old dental clinic by any chance?. Jean.

Phil
I don't seem to be able to find a picture of it, and wasn't around Birmingham that long ago, but is it the old Dental hospital in Gt charles St, opposite New Market St ?
Mike

Jean

I'm going to give it to you because, after your answer it wasn't a great leap to the 100% correct answer that Mike gave. I'm sure he won't mind even if it his his birthday today.

It is Birmingham's first purpose built Dental Hospital opened in 1905 at 132 Great Charles St after moving from Newhall St. It was built by the Architectural Practice of Bateman & Bateman at a cost of £10,000. It closed in the early 60's and moved to St Chads Queensway after changes to that end & side of Great Charles St.

Phil i knew this building like i said it was in my memory i went in there when i was younger i just coudn,t place it it has now been replaced by a council car park that i use regularly when i shop in town. A well done to Jean for switching on to the clue although i believed i missed one in an ear earlier post "the word recap "was this intentional ? Dek

Jean

You mut be thinking of some one else, I don't give clues.

Dek

Would I be so cryptic?

Phil

Astonite,

Yes that is when it was at 71 Newhall Street, the first Dental Hospital was opened in Temple Street in 1857 with two chairs and no anaesthetic, in 1871 it moved to Broad Street and by 1890 it was in Newhall Street. All three of the buildings used had originally been used for other purposes.
