Where is This? 151

If it is Stephenson Place as Dave suggests then I would suggest that the event that took place 3 years after was possibly the opening of New Street Railway Station

So the photo must be pre 1925, looks early 1900's to me, three years afterwards, the start of World War One? or is it something to do with this location?

The photo was taken in 1875 (I know it doesn't look that old does it). What took place only has to do with that location. Not world events or anything further afield. Look at the photo, it is so obvious now you know the location.

i was thinking something to do with stephensons rocket but that was before this pic was taken and i just know i am way off the mark...grasping at straws again...lol...

Jayell

Thats it, in 1878 they demolished those shops you can see opposite Stephenson Place and made a start to Building Corporation Street.

hi
is it newtown row showing the shop where the fa cup was stolen from after the villa had won it
phil

Yes Jayell it was a long slog, but well done to you, and to all the others that took part especially to Dave who cracked a good part of it.

Lyn

The building to the right of the statue has gone, here is a photo shortly after it was demolished and another of the concrete block that replaced it.

That was fun! I think I got a crash course in Thomas Attwood by trying to get this one! Thanks Phil, nice one!

What a shame the statue of Thomas Attwood was vandalised whilst on display at Highgate park, thankfully I think it has been put into storage awaiting restoration thanks to pressure applied by the Victorian Society.

If you would like to find out more about this statue visit www.victorian-society-bham.org.uk click on Newsletters and take a look in the October 2008 edition, statue article on page 10.

Hi Dave

If we all learn something then these little puzzles are worth while. I've started of late trying to make them as interesting as I can by asking for little snippets of the history of the locations. That way I have research the location myself so I know a little about it. This way I also learn a little more myself about the history of Birmingham.

By the way The statue stood for many years in Calthorpe Park Balsall Heath unmolested. It was only when it was moved to Larches Green in Sparkbrook (not 50 yards from where my old house stood) that it was vandalised.

They say after a £70,000 renovation a space has been found for it down Summer Row way.

thanks for the pics phil...now ive got me bearings...when looking at your orignal pic i thought the curve in the road was going round to new st station...and i thought that the building on the right of the statue was the building thats still there..i think it used to be waterstones....told you i am hopeless...look forward to the next one..

I recognised the statue right away as I used to climb up onto the base/plynth when it was in Calthorpe Park. The last time I whent to the Park the old base , as in the picture, was still there.
